Impact

Unauthenticated remote attackers can upload malicious web shells to execute arbitrary commands with system privileges, leading to complete infrastructure compromise

Mitigation

Immediately apply the official hotfixes/patches provided by Trend Micro and restrict external access to the management console

Affected Products & Version Scope

All On-Premise versions of Trend Micro Apex Central (SaaS version is unaffected)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Administrators must download and apply the latest official hotfix or patch from the Trend Micro Support Portal. Use the following PowerShell commands to verify the installation path and restart the core services after applying the patch.

powershell
# Verify the current Apex Central version from the registry
Get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\OfficeScan\service\Information' -Name 'Version'

# Restart the core services to apply the patch changes
Restart-Service -Name 'OfcService' -Force
Restart-Service -Name 'W3SVC' -Force

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict access to the Apex Central management console using firewall rules, and configure IIS Request Filtering or reverse proxy rules to block unauthorized file uploads.

nginx
# Example Nginx reverse proxy configuration to block external upload requests
server {
    listen 443 ssl;
    server_name apexcentral.local;

    # Restrict access to upload endpoints to internal IP ranges only
    location ~* /(webapp/.*upload|officescan/.*upload) {
        allow 10.0.0.0/8;
        allow 192.168.0.0/16;
        deny all;
    }
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Inspect IIS access logs and the Apex Central installation directory for unauthorized file creation or suspicious web shell activity.

powershell
# Search IIS logs for successful POST requests targeting .aspx files
Select-String -Path 'C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles\W3SVC*\*.log' -Pattern 'POST' | Select-String -Pattern '\.aspx' | Select-String -Pattern ' 200 '

# Scan the Apex Central directory for recently modified executable files
Get-ChildItem -Path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Trend Micro\Apex Central\*' -Include *.aspx,*.ashx,*.exe,*.dll -Recurse | Where-Object { $_.LastWriteTime -gt (Get-Date).AddDays(-30) }

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2022-26871) is an arbitrary file upload flaw in Trend Micro Apex Central. The root cause lies in the failure of the file upload handling module to properly validate and sanitize file extensions, MIME types, and integrity before saving them to the disk (CWE-345). This allows unauthenticated remote attackers to upload executable scripts (such as .aspx or .jsp) directly to directories accessible by the web server.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker sends a crafted HTTP POST request containing multipart form data to a vulnerable file upload endpoint in Apex Central. Because this endpoint does not enforce authentication, the request is processed without valid session credentials. The server saves the payload (e.g., a web shell) into the web root directory. The attacker then sends a direct HTTP GET request to the uploaded file's URL, triggering the execution of the malicious payload under the security context of the web server process (IIS or SYSTEM), resulting in remote code execution.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

Apex Central serves as the central command console for managing endpoint security agents across an enterprise. A compromise of this server allows attackers to disable endpoint protections, distribute malware laterally across the internal network, or deploy ransomware. Given that this vulnerability has been actively exploited in the wild and is listed on the CISA KEV catalog, the risk to business continuity and data confidentiality is extremely high.
