Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Firefox < 97.0.2, Firefox ESR < 91.6.1, Firefox for Android < 97.3.0, Thunderbird < 91.6.2, and Focus < 97.3.0

Impact

Remote attackers can trigger memory corruption via a crafted XSLT stylesheet to execute arbitrary code on the target system, with active exploitation reported in the wild

Mitigation

Immediately update all affected Mozilla products to their respective patched versions (Firefox 97.0.2+, Firefox ESR 91.6.1+, Thunderbird 91.6.2+, etc.)

Affected Products & Version Scope

Firefox < 97.0.2, Firefox ESR < 91.6.1, Firefox for Android < 97.3.0, Thunderbird < 91.6.2, and Focus < 97.3.0

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

For Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux distributions, update Firefox and Thunderbird immediately using the APT package manager:

bash
# Update package lists and upgrade to the latest secure versions
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install firefox thunderbird -y

For Red Hat/Rocky Linux environments, execute the upgrade using DNF:

bash
# Upgrade packages via DNF
sudo dnf upgrade firefox thunderbird -y

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible in enterprise environments, deploy a centralized policy file (policies.json) to restrict unauthorized browser configurations and block access to untrusted external resources.

json
// Place in /etc/firefox/policies/policies.json or C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\distribution\policies.json
{
  "policies": {
    "BlockAboutConfig": true,
    "ExtensionSettings": {
      "*": {
        "installation_mode": "blocked"
      }
    }
  }
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following Bash script to audit the currently installed Firefox version on endpoints and identify if they are running vulnerable versions.

bash
#!/bin/bash
# Audit script for Firefox vulnerability detection
if command -v firefox >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    CURRENT_VER=$(firefox --version | awk '{print $3}')
    echo '[INFO] Current Firefox Version: '$CURRENT_VER
    # Check if version is older than 97.0.2
    dpkg --compare-versions "$CURRENT_VER" "lt" "97.0.2" && echo '[WARNING] Vulnerable Firefox version detected! Immediate update required.' || echo '[OK] Firefox is secure.'
else
    echo '[INFO] Firefox is not installed.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2022-26485) is a critical Use-After-Free (UAF) memory corruption flaw residing within Mozilla's XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) processing engine. During the transformation of an XML document using an XSLT stylesheet, removing an XSLT parameter dynamically can lead to a condition where the memory allocated for the parameter object is freed, but a dangling pointer to that memory address remains active. Subsequent attempts to reference this freed memory result in a Use-After-Free condition.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by hosting a malicious website containing a specially crafted XSLT stylesheet and enticing a victim to visit the site (e.g., via spear-phishing or drive-by compromise). When the victim's browser processes the XSLT document and triggers the removal of a specific parameter, the engine deallocates the associated memory. The attacker then utilizes heap manipulation techniques to populate the freed memory space with controlled payloads. When the browser attempts to reuse the dangling pointer, control flow is hijacked, allowing arbitrary code execution within the context of the browser's sandbox.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As this vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and listed in the CISA KEV catalog, it poses an immediate threat to enterprise endpoints. Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to compromise user workstations, bypass security controls, and establish an initial foothold within the corporate network. This can lead to subsequent lateral movement, sensitive data exfiltration, and deployment of ransomware, causing severe operational and financial damage.
