Zabbix Frontend setup.php Unauthenticated Configuration Bypass Vulnerability (CVE-2022-23134) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTZabbix Frontend versions 5.4.0 to 5.4.8, and 6.0.0-alpha1 to 6.0.0-beta1
Unauthenticated remote attackers can bypass step verification in setup.php to access configuration stages and potentially alter the Zabbix Frontend database connection settings
Immediately upgrade Zabbix Frontend to patched versions (5.4.9, 6.0.0-beta2 or later) and restrict external access to the setup.php file via web server configuration
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Upgrade your Zabbix Frontend packages to the patched versions (5.4.9, 6.0.0-beta2, or later). Use the following commands depending on your operating system:
# For Debian/Ubuntu systems
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install zabbix-frontend-php -y
# For RHEL/CentOS systems
sudo yum update zabbix-web-deps zabbix-web -y2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict access to setup.php at the web server level so that only trusted internal IP addresses can access it.
# Nginx configuration workaround (/etc/nginx/conf.d/zabbix.conf)
location = /setup.php {
allow 10.0.0.0/8; # Replace with your trusted admin subnet
deny all;
fastcgi_pass unix:/var/run/php/php7.4-fpm.sock;
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Audit your web server access logs to identify unauthorized external IP addresses attempting to access the setup.php file.
# Search for setup.php access attempts in Apache and Nginx logs
grep -E 'setup.php' /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/apache2/access.log | awk '{print $1, $6, $7, $9}' | sort | uniq -cBlock Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2022-23134) exists due to insufficient access control and session validation within the setup.php script of Zabbix Frontend. Although the setup wizard is intended only for initial deployment or authorized super-administrators, the application fails to properly restrict access to active setup steps after the initial installation is completed. This allows unauthenticated users to reach sensitive setup phases by manipulating session states.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker targets the publicly accessible setup.php endpoint. By crafting specific HTTP requests or manipulating session cookies, the attacker bypasses the validation checks that determine whether the setup process has already been finalized. Once bypassed, the attacker can access the database configuration step, allowing them to point the Zabbix Frontend to an external, attacker-controlled database server, effectively hijacking the application's data source.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability with a high EPSS score, this flaw is actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows attackers to alter the core configuration of the monitoring environment. This can lead to credential theft, denial of service of the monitoring infrastructure, or secondary remote code execution (RCE) attacks by feeding malicious payloads from an attacker-controlled database to the frontend.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
After the initial setup process, some steps of setup.php file are reachable not only by super-administrators, but by unauthenticated users as well. Malicious actor can pass step checks and potentially change the configuration of Zabbix Frontend.
