Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

macOS Monterey prior to 12.3.1, macOS Big Sur prior to 11.6.6, and macOS Catalina prior to Security Update 2022-004.

Impact

A local attacker can exploit this vulnerability to read sensitive kernel memory, potentially leading to the disclosure of cryptographic keys, system credentials, or memory layouts.

Mitigation

Immediately apply the official security updates provided by Apple (macOS Monterey 12.3.1, Big Sur 11.6.6, or Security Update 2022-004 Catalina).

Affected Products & Version Scope

macOS Monterey < 12.3.1, macOS Big Sur < 11.6.6, macOS Catalina prior to Security Update 2022-004

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Open the terminal on your macOS device and execute the following commands to download and install the latest security updates.

bash
# List all available software updates
softwareupdate -l

# Download and install all updates, then restart the system
sudo softwareupdate -i -a --restart

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict local terminal access and disable guest accounts via MDM or terminal commands to minimize the attack surface.

bash
# Disable the Guest Account to prevent unauthorized local access
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow GuestEnabled -bool NO

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following commands to verify the current macOS version and inspect system logs for potential kernel anomalies.

bash
# Verify the current macOS version and build number
sw_vers

# Query system logs for kernel-related anomalies or panic events
log show --predicate 'process == "kernel"' --info | grep -E -i 'out-of-bounds|panic|memory-disclosure' | tail -n 50

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2022-22674) is an out-of-bounds read issue (CWE-125) residing within the macOS kernel. The root cause is insufficient input validation when the kernel processes parameters passed from user space. Due to this lack of boundary checks, the kernel can be coerced into reading memory addresses outside the allocated buffer.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

A local attacker with standard user privileges can craft malicious system calls or API requests targeting the vulnerable kernel subsystem. Because the kernel fails to validate the bounds of the requested offset, it reads and returns data from adjacent kernel memory spaces. This allows the attacker to bypass Kernel Address Space Layout Randomization (KASLR) or extract sensitive data belonging to other processes.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As this vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV catalog, it has been actively exploited in the wild. Kernel memory disclosure is highly critical because it serves as a prerequisite for local privilege escalation (LPE) exploits. Compromising an employee's macOS workstation can lead to credential theft, lateral movement within corporate networks, and unauthorized access to sensitive business assets.
