Windows CSRSS Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2022-22047) Technical Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWide range of Windows operating systems including Windows 10, 11, and Windows Server 2008 through 2022
A local authenticated attacker can exploit the vulnerability to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges by abusing the CSRSS process
Immediately apply the Microsoft official Cumulative Update (LCU) and monitor for unauthorized local account activities and anomalous child processes
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
This vulnerability was addressed in the July 2022 Microsoft Security Update cycle and subsequent cumulative updates. Use the following PowerShell commands to force-install the latest cumulative updates.
# Install and import the Windows Update module to apply the latest patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -Verbose
Get-WindowsUpdate -AcceptAll -Install -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
Since this is a kernel-level subsystem vulnerability, the primary workaround prior to patching is restricting local access. Disable unnecessary local accounts and restrict Remote Desktop Services (RDS) access.
# Disable the local Guest account and restrict RDP connections
Disable-LocalUser -Name 'Guest'
Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server' -Name 'fDenyTSConnections' -Value 13. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify if the required security update (KB) is installed, and audit the system event logs for anomalous child processes spawned by CSRSS.
# Verify if the July 2022 security update (e.g., KB5015807 for Win10 21H2) is installed
Get-HotFix | Where-Object { $_.HotFixID -match 'KB5015807' }
# Query Security Event Logs (EID 4688) for suspicious child processes spawned by csrss.exe
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='Security'; Id=4688} -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Where-Object { $_.Message -like '*csrss.exe*' -and ($_.Message -like '*cmd.exe*' -or $_.Message -like '*powershell.exe*') }Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability is an Elevation of Privilege (EoP) flaw in the Windows Client Server Run-time Subsystem (CSRSS), which is a critical user-mode subsystem responsible for managing processes, threads, and console windows. Because CSRSS constantly runs under the highly privileged 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM' context, any compromise of its execution flow is critical. The root cause lies in insecure search path handling (CWE-426) or improper resource validation during inter-process communication (LPC/ALPC), allowing local attackers to hijack the subsystem's execution path.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first gain local access to the target system with low-privilege user credentials. The attacker then exploits flaws in how CSRSS handles specific API calls or initializes new process/thread contexts. By placing a specially crafted malicious DLL in a directory searched by CSRSS, or by manipulating ALPC messages, the attacker forces the CSRSS process to load and execute the malicious payload. This results in an immediate privilege escalation from a standard user session to SYSTEM privileges.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability is highly critical and is actively cataloged in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) list, indicating active exploitation in the wild. In a real-world attack scenario, threat actors leverage this vulnerability during the post-exploitation phase to move laterally, disable endpoint detection and response (EDR) agents, deploy ransomware, or compromise Active Directory Domain Controllers, leading to complete infrastructure takeover.
