Windows User Profile Service Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2022-21919) Deep Dive & Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTMost Windows client and server operating systems, including Windows 10, 11, and Windows Server 2008 through 2022
A locally authenticated attacker can exploit a symbolic link vulnerability to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges, leading to full system compromise
Immediately apply the official Microsoft cumulative security updates and restrict local logon privileges in multi-user environments
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to apply the official cumulative updates provided by Microsoft. Use the following PowerShell commands to automate the update process on affected hosts.
# Install Windows Update module and apply all pending security patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -SkipPublisherCheck
Get-WindowsUpdate -AcceptAll -Install -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict local interactive logon privileges and disable unnecessary remote access services to minimize the attack surface.
# Disable Remote Desktop Services (RDP) if not business-critical
Stop-Service -Name 'TermService' -Force
Set-Service -Name 'TermService' -StartupType Disabled
# Disable the local Guest account to prevent unauthorized local access
Disable-LocalUser -Name 'Guest'3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Administrators can scan for suspicious symbolic links in user directories and audit the Application event logs for User Profile Service anomalies.
# Scan for unexpected symbolic links or junction points in the Users directory
Get-ChildItem -Path 'C:\Users' -Recurse -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Where-Object { $_.Attributes -match 'ReparsePoint' } |
Select-Object FullName, LinkType, Target
# Query Event Viewer for warnings or errors related to User Profile Service
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='Application'; ProviderName='Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service'; Level=1,2,3} -MaxEvents 50 |
Format-Table TimeCreated, Id, Message -WrapBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2022-21919) is an elevation of privilege (EoP) vulnerability in the Windows User Profile Service (ProfSvc). The root cause lies in the improper validation of file paths and symbolic links when the service performs file operations with elevated (SYSTEM) privileges (CWE-59). When creating or migrating user profiles, the service fails to verify whether the target directory is a junction point or a symbolic link, allowing low-privileged users to redirect file operations to restricted system locations.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker must first gain local access to the target system with low-privileged user credentials. The attacker then monitors the file system activities of the User Profile Service, specifically targeting profile creation events. By exploiting a race condition, the attacker creates a symbolic link or NTFS junction pointing from a user-controlled directory (such as a temporary profile path) to a critical system directory (e.g., C:\Windows\System32). When ProfSvc attempts to write to or modify permissions on the profile path, it follows the symbolic link and inadvertently overwrites or modifies permissions of critical system files, enabling the attacker to hijack system DLLs and execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a vulnerability listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, CVE-2022-21919 poses a severe threat to enterprise environments. If an attacker gains an initial foothold in an Active Directory domain, they can leverage this vulnerability to escalate privileges to SYSTEM on domain-joined workstations or servers. This facilitates lateral movement, credential dumping, and full domain compromise, potentially resulting in ransomware deployment and catastrophic business disruption.
