Cisco Small Business RV Series Routers Privilege Escalation and Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2022-20701)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTCisco Small Business RV160, RV260, RV340, and RV345 Series Routers
Local attackers can trigger a stack-based buffer overflow to elevate privileges to root and execute arbitrary code
Immediately apply the latest firmware updates provided by Cisco and restrict access to the management interface
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the latest secure firmware version from the Cisco Software Download portal. Use the CLI or Web GUI to perform the upgrade.
# Example: Upgrading firmware via TFTP server from the router CLI
# Note: Ensure the correct firmware filename is used for your specific model.
copy tftp://192.168.1.100/rv34x-v1.0.03.26-gpg.bin image
show bootvar
# Reload the device to apply the new firmware
reload2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, disable remote management and restrict access to the web management interface to trusted IP addresses only.
# Disable remote HTTP/HTTPS management services
configure terminal
no ip http server
no ip http secure-server
# Restrict management access to a trusted subnet (e.g., 10.10.10.0/24)
ip access-list extended MGMT_ACL
permit tcp 10.10.10.0 0.0.0.255 any eq 443
deny tcp any any eq 443
exit3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the current firmware version and inspect system logs for signs of buffer overflows or unexpected process crashes.
# Verify the current running firmware version
show version
# Search system logs for crash indicators, segmentation faults, or memory errors
show log | include 'crash|segfault|SIGSEGV|overflow'Stop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2022-20701) exists in the system processing modules of Cisco Small Business RV160, RV260, RV340, and RV345 Series Routers. The root cause is a stack-based buffer overflow (CWE-121, CWE-787) resulting from insufficient validation of user-supplied input. When an attacker passes crafted data to the internal system processes, the application writes beyond the allocated buffer boundary without proper bounds checking, allowing control over the execution flow.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first obtain local access or low-privileged user credentials on the target router. The attacker then transmits a malicious payload designed to exceed the buffer limits of the vulnerable binary or web management parameter. This overwrites the stack's return address with the address of the attacker's shellcode or system commands, enabling privilege escalation to root and execution of arbitrary commands or unsigned software.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As this vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV (Known Exploited Vulnerabilities) catalog, it represents an active threat with confirmed wild exploitation. Successful exploitation allows an attacker to gain full root control over the gateway router. This compromises the entire network perimeter, enabling traffic sniffing, Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks, lateral movement into the internal network, and the establishment of persistent backdoors.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Multiple vulnerabilities in Cisco Small Business RV160, RV260, RV340, and RV345 Series Routers could allow an attacker to do any of the following: Execute arbitrary code Elevate privileges Execute arbitrary commands Bypass authentication and authorization protections Fetch and run unsigned software Cause denial of service (DoS) For more information about these vulnerabilities, see the Details section of this advisory.
