Microsoft Windows Installer Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2021-41379) Technical Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTMicrosoft Windows operating systems, including Windows 7, 8.1, 10, 11, and Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016, 2019, 2022
A local authenticated attacker can exploit improper link resolution in the Windows Installer service to delete or manipulate arbitrary files with SYSTEM privileges, potentially leading to full local privilege escalation
Apply the official cumulative security updates provided by Microsoft immediately, or restrict Windows Installer execution for non-administrative users as a temporary workaround
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Deploy the latest cumulative security updates via Windows Update or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). You can force the update process using the following PowerShell commands:
# Install and run Windows Update module to apply the latest security patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -Verbose
Get-WindowsUpdate -Install -Category 'Security Updates' -AcceptAll -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict the Windows Installer service for non-privileged users by modifying the registry to disable MSI execution:
# Restrict Windows Installer execution to administrators only via Registry
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer' -Name 'DisableMSI' -Value 1 -PropertyType DWord -Force3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Monitor the Application event log for MsiInstaller events (specifically Event IDs 1040 and 1042) to detect anomalous installer rollback activities or unauthorized installation attempts:
# Query Application logs for Windows Installer events to identify potential exploitation attempts
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{
LogName='Application';
ProviderName='MsiInstaller';
Id=1040,1042
} -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object TimeCreated, Id, Message | Format-ListBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2021-41379) is an elevation of privilege vulnerability in the Windows Installer service, arising from improper handling of junction points and symbolic links during installation and rollback operations. Because the Windows Installer service runs with elevated privileges (NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM), its failure to properly validate file paths and symbolic links in user-writable directories allows local attackers to manipulate arbitrary files on the system (CWE-59).
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first gain local access to the target system with standard user privileges. The attacker then executes a specially crafted Windows Installer (.msi) package designed to trigger a rollback operation. During this process, the attacker replaces the temporary directory paths used by the installer with symbolic links pointing to critical system files. When the installer attempts to clean up or modify these files, it performs the action on the target system files with SYSTEM privileges, allowing the attacker to bypass access controls and escalate privileges.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a vulnerability listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, CVE-2021-41379 has been actively exploited in the wild. In an enterprise environment, this vulnerability poses a severe threat as it can be utilized by lateral-movement threat actors to escalate privileges from a standard domain user to local SYSTEM on critical servers, leading to complete infrastructure compromise.
