Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome prior to version 94.0.4606.61 on desktop platforms

Impact

A remote attacker who has compromised the renderer process can potentially bypass the Chrome sandbox and execute arbitrary code on the host system via a crafted HTML page

Mitigation

Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable version (94.0.4606.61 or higher) and enforce automatic updates across enterprise endpoints

Affected Products & Version Scope

Google Chrome prior to version 94.0.4606.61 (All desktop operating systems including Windows, macOS, and Linux)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Use the following commands to update Google Chrome to the latest secure version using the system package manager on Linux platforms.

bash
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y

# For RedHat/CentOS/Fedora-based systems
sudo dnf upgrade google-chrome-stable -y

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, mitigate the risk by disabling the vulnerable Portals and pre-rendering features via command-line flags or enterprise group policies.

bash
# Launch Chrome with vulnerable experimental features explicitly disabled
google-chrome --disable-features=Portals,Prerender2

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Run the following script to audit the currently installed Chrome version and verify if the system is vulnerable to CVE-2021-37973.

bash
# Check installed Chrome version on Linux/macOS
CHROME_VER=$(google-chrome --version 2>/dev/null || /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome --version 2>/dev/null)
echo 'Current Chrome Version:' $CHROME_VER

# Parse and verify vulnerability status
if [[ $CHROME_VER =~ ([0-9]+)\.([0-9]+)\.([0-9]+)\.([0-9]+) ]]; then
    MAJOR=${BASH_REMATCH}
    BUILD=${BASH_REMATCH}
    if [ $MAJOR -lt 94 ] || { [ $MAJOR -eq 94 ] && [ $BUILD -lt 4606 ]; }; then
        echo '[WARNING] System is vulnerable to CVE-2021-37973. Upgrade immediately.'
    else
        echo '[SAFE] Chrome is patched against CVE-2021-37973.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2021-37973) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw residing within the 'Portals' component of Google Chrome. Portals is an experimental navigation and page-embedding feature designed to allow seamless transitions and pre-rendering. Due to improper object lifecycle management, certain objects within the Portals implementation are destroyed while active pointers to them are still retained. This dangling pointer condition allows an attacker to reuse the freed memory space, leading to memory corruption.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first compromise the renderer process (e.g., via a separate renderer vulnerability or malicious script execution). Once renderer-level execution is achieved, the attacker coaxes the victim into loading a specially crafted HTML page. By manipulating the creation and destruction of Portals objects via JavaScript, the attacker triggers the UAF condition, populating the freed heap memory with controlled payloads. When the browser attempts to reference the stale pointer, control flow is hijacked, enabling the attacker to escape the Chrome sandbox and execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the browser process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.6 (Critical), this vulnerability poses a severe threat and has been actively exploited in the wild, leading to its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog. Successful exploitation allows complete compromise of the user's endpoint without requiring administrative privileges or significant user interaction beyond visiting a malicious site. In an enterprise environment, this can serve as an initial access vector for lateral movement, ransomware deployment, and sensitive data exfiltration.
