Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome prior to version 93.0.4577.82 and Chromium-based browsers utilizing the V8 engine

Impact

Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code within the browser renderer process and compromise the host system via a crafted HTML page

Mitigation

Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable version (93.0.4577.82 or higher)

Affected Products & Version Scope

Google Chrome prior to version 93.0.4577.82 (All operating systems: Windows, macOS, Linux)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

To upgrade Google Chrome to the patched version on Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux systems, execute the following commands:

bash
# Update package lists and upgrade Google Chrome to the latest stable version
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y

# Verify the installed version
google-chrome --version

For RedHat/CentOS-based systems, use the following command:

bash
# Upgrade Google Chrome using YUM package manager
sudo yum update google-chrome-stable -y

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, enforce strict Site Isolation and restrict JavaScript execution on untrusted sites. You can enforce Site Isolation via Windows Registry using PowerShell:

powershell
# Enforce Strict Site Isolation via Windows Registry
New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Force | Out-Null
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Name 'SitePerProcess' -Value 1 -PropertyType DWord -Force

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following PowerShell script to audit enterprise endpoints, retrieve the installed Chrome version, and identify vulnerable hosts:

powershell
# Audit local Chrome installation and check vulnerability status
$chromePath = (Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\chrome.exe').'(default)'
if ($chromePath) {
    $version = [System.Diagnostics.FileVersionInfo]::GetVersionInfo($chromePath).FileVersion
    Write-Host 'Current Chrome Version:' $version
    $threshold = [System.Version]'93.0.4577.82'
    $current = [System.Version]$version
    if ($current -lt $threshold) {
        Write-Warning 'ALERT: System is VULNERABLE to CVE-2021-30632. Upgrade immediately.'
    } else {
        Write-Host 'CONFIRMED: Chrome is patched and secure.' -ForegroundColor Green
    }
} else {
    Write-Host 'Google Chrome is not detected on this system.'
}

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2021-30632) is an Out-of-Bounds (OOB) Write vulnerability (CWE-787) residing in the V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine of Google Chrome. The root cause lies in a Type Confusion bug within the V8 JIT (Just-In-Time) compiler's optimization pipeline. When the compiler incorrectly infers or tracks object types during optimization, it miscalculates memory layouts and buffer sizes, leading to an out-of-bounds memory write condition.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a malicious HTML page containing specially crafted JavaScript code. When a target user visits the page, the V8 engine attempts to compile and optimize the malicious script. The resulting type confusion allows the attacker to construct read/write primitives in the browser's memory space. This leads to heap corruption, enabling the execution of arbitrary shellcode within the context of the sandboxed renderer process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a highly critical zero-day vulnerability actively exploited in the wild (listed in CISA KEV), the business impact is severe. Successful exploitation allows remote code execution (RCE) on user endpoints. Although the initial execution is confined to the browser sandbox, attackers frequently chain this with OS-level privilege escalation vulnerabilities to escape the sandbox, compromise the local system, and pivot into the corporate internal network.
