Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Pulse Connect Secure versions prior to 9.1R11.4

Impact

A remote authenticated attacker can execute arbitrary code with root privileges on the target system via a maliciously crafted meeting room.

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade Pulse Connect Secure to version 9.1R11.4 or higher, and disable unused Meeting Room features.

Affected Products & Version Scope

All Pulse Connect Secure (PCS) versions prior to 9.1R11.4 (including 9.1R11.3 and below)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Download the latest secure OS image (9.1R11.4 or higher) from the Ivanti/Pulse Secure support portal and perform the upgrade. Verify the current version and apply the update via the administration console.

bash
# 1. Check the current running version of Pulse Connect Secure
show system info

# 2. Follow the official vendor documentation to upload and apply the secure OS image package via the Web UI or CLI admin console.

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If patching cannot be applied immediately, disable the vulnerable Meeting Room feature to mitigate the risk, and restrict access to the administrator interface.

bash
# 1. Disable the Meeting Room feature
# Web UI Navigation: Go to 'Users' -> 'User Roles' -> Select Role -> 'General' tab -> Uncheck 'Meetings'

# 2. Restrict Admin Console access to trusted management networks only (OOB)
# Ensure external access to the admin port is blocked at the perimeter firewall.

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Audit the system logs for any unusual meeting room requests or unexpected application crashes.

bash
# Search for meeting room URI patterns and potential crash indicators in the exported PCS access logs
grep -Ei '/dana/meeting/' /var/log/pcs_access.log | grep -E 'status=500|crash'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

A buffer overflow vulnerability (CWE-119) exists in the Meeting Room collaboration component of Pulse Connect Secure (PCS). Due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input, an authenticated attacker can send crafted payloads that exceed the allocated buffer boundaries, leading to memory corruption and arbitrary code execution (CWE-94) with root privileges.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first authenticate to the Pulse Connect Secure SSL-VPN gateway with valid user credentials. Once authenticated, the attacker sends a specially crafted request to initiate or modify a meeting room. The backend C/C++ parser fails to validate the length of specific parameters within this request, causing a buffer overflow on the stack or heap. This allows the attacker to overwrite critical memory structures, hijack the execution flow, and execute arbitrary shellcodes or system commands as the root user.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

Since Pulse Connect Secure serves as the primary gateway to internal corporate networks, a root-level compromise of this appliance exposes the entire internal infrastructure. Attackers can leverage the compromised VPN gateway to perform lateral movement, compromise Active Directory domains, exfiltrate sensitive data, or deploy ransomware. This vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV catalog, indicating active exploitation in the wild, making immediate remediation critical.
