Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
According to SonicWall's official advisory, administrators must upgrade to version 10.0.9.6173 or higher. Use the following CLI commands on the appliance to verify the current version and apply the update.
# Verify the current firmware version
show version
# Download and apply the patched firmware image
# Note: Ensure a full system backup is taken before proceeding.
upgrade system-image ftp://anonymous@ftp.sonicwall.com/sw_es_v10.0.9.6173.bin2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be applied immediately, restrict access to the management interface (/admin or /usermanager) using a firewall or a reverse proxy to allow only trusted IP addresses.
# Example Nginx configuration to restrict access to the admin console
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name emailsecurity.local;
location /admin {
# Allow only trusted internal administrator subnets
allow 10.0.0.0/24;
allow 192.168.1.0/24;
deny all;
proxy_pass https://backend_sonicwall;
}
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect web server logs and directories for unauthorized file uploads and potential web shell execution using the following commands.
# Search Apache/Tomcat access logs for suspicious upload activities and JSP execution
grep -Ei 'upload|/images/|/temp/' /var/log/sonicwall/httpd/access_log | grep -E '\.jsp|\.sh|\.py'
# Find any JSP files created or modified within the web root in the last 7 days
find /var/sonicwall/webapps/ -mtime -7 -type f -name '*.jsp'Stop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2021-20022) is an arbitrary file upload flaw (CWE-434) residing within the file upload functionality of SonicWall Email Security. The root cause is the application's failure to properly validate and sanitize file extensions, MIME types, and destination paths of uploaded files. An attacker who has established an authenticated session can exploit this lack of validation to upload malicious files, such as web shells, directly into the web root directory.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker first obtains valid credentials or chains this vulnerability with other flaws (e.g., CVE-2021-20021) to establish an authenticated session. The attacker then crafts a multipart HTTP POST request targeting the file upload API endpoint. By embedding directory traversal sequences ('../../') or executable extensions (such as '.jsp' or '.py') into the filename parameter, the attacker bypasses basic filters. The server saves the payload into an accessible web directory, allowing the attacker to execute arbitrary commands by requesting the uploaded file.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As this vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV catalog, it has been actively exploited in the wild by threat actors. Successful exploitation allows attackers to establish a persistent foothold within the DMZ. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive email archives, utilization of the appliance for outbound spam/phishing campaigns, and lateral movement into the internal Active Directory domain, posing a severe threat to corporate infrastructure.
