Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome prior to version 81.0.4044.92

Impact

Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code or compromise the browser sandbox via a specially crafted HTML page

Mitigation

Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable version (81.0.4044.92 or higher)

Affected Products & Version Scope

All Google Chrome desktop versions (Windows, macOS, Linux) prior to 81.0.4044.92

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

The primary remediation is to upgrade Google Chrome to the latest secure version. For Linux-based environments, use the following package manager commands:

bash
# Update Google Chrome on Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y

# Update Google Chrome on RedHat/CentOS-based systems
sudo yum update google-chrome-stable -y

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, enforce security policies to restrict access to untrusted sites or ensure sandbox features are strictly enforced via registry settings.

powershell
# Enforce Chrome Sandbox policies via Windows Registry
New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Force | Out-Null
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Name 'SandboxHTML5APIs' -Value 1 -PropertyType DWord -Force

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following PowerShell script to audit endpoints and identify if any vulnerable versions of Google Chrome are currently installed.

powershell
# PowerShell script to audit Google Chrome version on Windows endpoints
$chromePath = '${Env:ProgramFiles}\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe'
if (Test-Path $chromePath) {
    $version = (Get-Item $chromePath).VersionInfo.ProductVersion
    Write-Host 'Current Chrome Version:' $version
    [version]$currentVer = $version
    [version]$safeVer = '81.0.4044.92'
    if ($currentVer -lt $safeVer) {
        Write-Warning 'WARNING: Vulnerable Chrome version detected. Immediate update required!'
    } else {
        Write-Host 'SUCCESS: Secure version of Chrome is installed.' -ForegroundColor Green
    }
} else {
    Write-Host 'Google Chrome is not installed in the default path.'
}

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2020-6572) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw within the Media processing component of Google Chrome. It occurs when the browser fails to properly manage the lifecycle of memory objects used during the handling of media streams (such as audio or video). When an object is freed from memory but a dangling pointer still references its address, subsequent attempts to access or manipulate this pointer can lead to memory corruption and control flow hijacking.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a malicious HTML page containing specifically crafted media elements and JavaScript. When a victim visits the page, the browser attempts to parse the media content, triggering premature memory deallocation of a critical object. The attacker then utilizes heap manipulation techniques (such as heap spraying) to populate the freed memory space with controlled payloads. When the browser references the dangling pointer, it executes the attacker's payload within the context of the browser process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As this vulnerability is listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, it has been actively exploited in the wild. In an enterprise environment, successful exploitation can lead to complete endpoint compromise if an employee visits a compromised or malicious website. This can serve as an initial entry point for lateral movement, sensitive data exfiltration, or ransomware deployment across the corporate network.
