Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers prior to version 80.0.3987.122, and runtime environments utilizing the V8 engine

Impact

Remote attackers can exploit heap corruption via a crafted HTML page, potentially leading to arbitrary remote code execution (RCE) on the target system

Mitigation

Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable version (80.0.3987.122 or higher) and apply system package updates for V8 dependencies

Affected Products & Version Scope

Google Chrome versions prior to 80.0.3987.122 across all platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux) and Chromium-based browsers utilizing vulnerable V8 engine builds

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Update Google Chrome and its dependencies to the patched version on desktop and server environments.

bash
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y

# For RedHat/CentOS/Fedora-based systems
sudo dnf upgrade google-chrome-stable -y

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, enforce strict sandbox controls and restrict JavaScript execution on untrusted sites via system policies.

bash
# Ensure Chrome is never run with the '--no-sandbox' flag in production environments
# Apply Windows Registry policy to disable JavaScript by default for untrusted zones
reg add 'HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' /v 'DefaultJavaScriptSetting' /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f
# (Note: Value '2' disables JS globally. Configure 'JavaScriptAllowedForUrls' to whitelist trusted domains.)

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following script to audit the currently installed Google Chrome version and identify vulnerable deployments.

bash
# Shell script to verify Chrome version compliance on Linux endpoints
CURRENT_VERSION=$(google-chrome --version | awk '{print $3}')
SAFE_VERSION='80.0.3987.122'

if [ '$(printf '%s\
' '$SAFE_VERSION' '$CURRENT_VERSION' | sort -V | head -n1)' = '$SAFE_VERSION' ]; then
    echo '[OK] Installed Chrome version '$CURRENT_VERSION' is secure.'
else
    echo '[WARNING] Vulnerable Chrome version detected: '$CURRENT_VERSION'. Upgrade immediately!'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2020-6418) is a critical Type Confusion vulnerability in V8, the open-source high-performance JavaScript and WebAssembly engine used in Google Chrome. The root cause lies within the JIT (Just-In-Time) compiler, TurboFan, which fails to properly account for side-effects during the JSCreate phase. When optimizing JavaScript code, TurboFan assumes a specific object structure (Map). However, if a side-effect dynamically alters the object's map during creation, the compiler continues to access memory based on the outdated map assumption, resulting in type confusion.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker can trigger this vulnerability by crafting a malicious JavaScript payload that utilizes features like Proxy objects or Reflect.construct to execute user-defined callbacks during object instantiation. Within the callback, the attacker alters the layout of the object, forcing a map transition. Because TurboFan's optimization pipeline fails to track this side-effect, it generates machine code that accesses the object using incorrect offsets. This mismatch grants the attacker out-of-bounds read/write primitives in the V8 heap, which can be leveraged to bypass security mitigations, corrupt memory, and execute arbitrary shellcode.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a vulnerability listed in the CISA KEV catalog, CVE-2020-6418 has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows an attacker to compromise an endpoint system entirely when a user simply visits a compromised or malicious website. This serves as a highly effective initial access vector for corporate network intrusion, potentially leading to lateral movement, sensitive data exfiltration, ransomware deployment, and severe operational disruption.
