SECOPS ASSESSMENT64-bit Windows operating systems including Windows 7, 8.1, 10, and Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016, 2019 utilizing the splwow64.exe process
Local attackers can exploit memory corruption (CWE-787) to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges, leading to complete system compromise
Apply the official Microsoft security updates immediately, or restrict local execution privileges and disable the Print Spooler service as a temporary workaround
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Deploy the official Microsoft Cumulative Update (LCU) to resolve the memory handling flaw. You can verify the patch status or force the update using PowerShell.
# Check if the specific KB patch is installed (e.g., KB4565351 for Windows 10 1909)
Get-HotFix -Id KB4565351
# Install the required cumulative update using the PSWindowsUpdate module
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -Verbose
Get-WindowsUpdate -KBArticleID KB4565351 -Install -AcceptAll -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, disable the Print Spooler service to prevent splwow64.exe from running, thereby mitigating the attack vector.
# Stop and disable the Print Spooler service
Stop-Service -Name 'Spooler' -Force
Set-Service -Name 'Spooler' -StartupType Disabled
# Terminate any active splwow64.exe processes
Stop-Process -Name 'splwow64' -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Monitor and audit process creation events to detect if splwow64.exe has spawned anomalous child processes such as command shells.
# Query WMI to detect anomalous child processes spawned by splwow64.exe
Get-CimInstance Win32_Process | Where-Object {
$parent = Get-CimInstance Win32_Process -Filter "ProcessId = $($_.ParentProcessId)";
$parent.Name -eq 'splwow64.exe' -and $_.Name -match '(cmd|powershell|wscript|cscript|rundll32)\.exe'
} | Select-Object ProcessId, Name, CommandLine, CreationDateBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2020-0986) is a Local Privilege Escalation (LPE) vulnerability caused by the Windows kernel failing to properly handle objects in memory, leading to an Out-of-bounds Write (CWE-787). Specifically, the flaw resides within the Local Procedure Call (LPC) port communication handling of splwow64.exe (the printer driver host for 32-bit applications running on 64-bit Windows). The process fails to validate pointer offsets passed via LPC messages, allowing an attacker to write arbitrary data to arbitrary memory addresses (Write-What-Where primitive) within the context of the splwow64.exe process.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first gain local access to the target system with low or medium integrity privileges. The attacker then establishes a connection to the LPC port exposed by splwow64.exe. By sending a specially crafted LPC message containing malicious pointers to functions like GdiPrinterThunk, the attacker bypasses pointer validation checks. This allows the attacker to overwrite critical memory structures or function pointers inside splwow64.exe, hijacking the execution flow to run arbitrary payloads with elevated SYSTEM privileges.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a vulnerability listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, CVE-2020-0986 has been actively exploited in the wild by advanced persistent threat (APT) actors. In an enterprise environment, this vulnerability is highly valuable for lateral movement and privilege escalation after an initial foothold is established. Compromising SYSTEM privileges allows attackers to disable endpoint detection and response (EDR) agents, dump credentials from LSASS memory, and compromise the entire Active Directory domain, posing a severe threat to business operations.
