Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Kibana versions before 5.6.15 and 6.6.1

Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can exploit a prototype pollution flaw in the Timelion visualizer to execute arbitrary shell commands with the privileges of the Kibana process on the host system.

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade Kibana to version 5.6.15, 6.6.1, or later, or disable the Timelion application in the configuration file.

Affected Products & Version Scope

Kibana versions prior to 5.6.15 and 6.6.1

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

The primary and recommended remediation is to upgrade Kibana to a non-vulnerable version (5.6.15 or 6.6.1 and above).

bash
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade kibana=6.6.1

# For RedHat/CentOS-based systems
sudo yum update kibana-6.6.1

# Restart and verify the Kibana service
sudo systemctl restart kibana
sudo systemctl status kibana

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, you must disable the Timelion visualizer in the Kibana configuration file to mitigate the attack vector.

bash
# Open the Kibana configuration file
sudo vi /etc/kibana/kibana.yml

# Append the following line to disable Timelion
timelion.enabled: false

# Restart the Kibana service to apply changes
sudo systemctl restart kibana

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Inspect Kibana and reverse proxy logs for suspicious POST requests targeting the Timelion endpoint containing prototype pollution patterns.

bash
# Search for prototype pollution attempts in Kibana logs
grep -Ei 'timelion.*proto' /var/log/kibana/*.log 2>/dev/null
grep -Ei 'NODE_OPTIONS|spawn' /var/log/nginx/access.log 2>/dev/null

# Verify the currently running Kibana version
/usr/share/kibana/bin/kibana --version

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2019-7609) is a critical Prototype Pollution and Code Injection flaw located within the Timelion visualization component of Elastic Kibana [1, CWE-94]. Kibana, running on the Node.js runtime, fails to properly sanitize and validate user-supplied input when merging or extending JavaScript object properties. An attacker can exploit this helper function behavior to inject properties into the global Object.prototype, leading to prototype pollution.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker with network access to the Kibana Timelion application can send a specially crafted HTTP POST request containing a malicious payload. The typical exploitation flow is as follows:

  • The attacker sends a request to the Timelion execution endpoint containing a payload designed to pollute the prototype chain using keys like __proto__ or constructor.prototype.
  • This pollution targets properties that influence environmental variables or execution arguments when Node.js spawns new child processes (e.g., child_process.spawn).
  • By injecting environmental variables such as NODE_OPTIONS with a --require argument pointing to a malicious file or input stream, the attacker forces the newly spawned Node.js process to execute arbitrary JavaScript code.
  • This ultimately spawns a reverse shell or executes arbitrary system commands on the host operating system under the context of the Kibana process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS score of 10.0 (Critical) and its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability represents an extreme risk and is actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation grants the attacker complete remote code execution (RCE) capabilities on the underlying host. This can lead to full system compromise, lateral movement within the internal network, exfiltration of sensitive data stored in Elasticsearch clusters, and deployment of ransomware, causing severe business disruption and compliance violations.
