Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome versions prior to 72.0.3626.121

Impact

Remote attackers can potentially execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (DoS) via a crafted HTML page

Mitigation

Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable version (72.0.3626.121 or higher)

Affected Products & Version Scope

All Google Chrome versions prior to 72.0.3626.121 across Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

To mitigate this vulnerability, upgrade Google Chrome to the latest stable release. Use the following package manager commands for enterprise Linux deployments:

bash
# Upgrade Google Chrome on Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y

# Upgrade Google Chrome on RedHat/CentOS-based systems
sudo yum update google-chrome-stable -y

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, enforce automatic updates via Group Policy Objects (GPO) or registry modifications to ensure endpoints receive the security patch as soon as they connect to the network.

powershell
# Force Google Update Policy via PowerShell Registry Modification
New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Update' -Force
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Update' -Name 'UpdateDefault' -Value 1 -PropertyType DWord -Force

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Run the following script to audit the installed Google Chrome version on endpoints and identify vulnerable installations.

bash
# Check installed Chrome version on Linux endpoints
installed_version=$(google-chrome --version 2>/dev/null | awk '{print $3}')
if [ -z '$installed_version' ]; then
echo 'Google Chrome is not installed.'
else
  echo 'Installed Chrome Version: '$installed_version
  # Verify if the version is lower than 72.0.3626.121

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2019-5786) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw within the Blink rendering engine of Google Chrome. It stems from an object lifetime management issue where the engine fails to properly release or track references to memory objects (such as those associated with the FileReader API). Consequently, a remote attacker can trigger an out-of-bounds memory access condition.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted HTML page containing malicious JavaScript. When a victim visits the page, the script manipulates DOM objects or asynchronous APIs to free a specific memory buffer while keeping a dangling pointer active. The attacker then reclaims the freed memory space with controlled payload data. When the browser attempts to reuse the dangling pointer, it executes the attacker's shellcode within the context of the renderer process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a vulnerability listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, CVE-2019-5786 has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation can lead to remote code execution (RCE) on the user's endpoint. In an enterprise environment, this poses a severe threat as a single compromised browser session can serve as an initial entry point for lateral movement and internal network intrusion.
