Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

FortiOS versions 6.2.0 and below, and 6.0.x branch prior to patched releases

Impact

An unauthenticated attacker on the same subnet can intercept sensitive credentials by impersonating the legitimate LDAP server

Mitigation

Upgrade FortiOS to the latest patched release or enforce LDAPS with strict certificate validation

Affected Products & Version Scope

FortiOS versions 6.2.0 and 6.0.6 and below utilizing LDAP authentication.

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Upgrade FortiOS to a secure branch (6.2.1+ or 6.0.7+). Use the following CLI commands to verify status and perform a secure firmware restoration:

bash
# Check current FortiOS version
get system status

# Restore/Upgrade firmware image via TFTP server safely
execute restore image tftp FGT_60E-v6-build1561-FORTINET.out 192.168.1.99

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, mitigate the risk by enforcing LDAPS (TCP 636) and enabling strict CA certificate validation in the LDAP user configuration.

bash
# Enforce LDAPS and bind CA certificate to prevent impersonation
config user ldap
    edit 'Corporate_LDAP'
        set server '10.100.10.50'
        set secure ldaps
        set port 636
        set ca-cert 'CA_Certificate_Name'
    next
end

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Monitor authentication traffic and audit existing LDAP configurations to identify insecure cleartext setups.

bash
# Enable real-time debugging for authentication daemon (fnbamd)
diagnose debug application fnbamd -1
diagnose debug enable

# Audit configuration for insecure LDAP port 389 usage
show user ldap | grep -f 'port 389'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2019-5591) stems from a default configuration flaw in Fortinet FortiOS. When FortiOS is configured to authenticate users via an external LDAP server, it does not enforce strict identity verification or secure channel negotiation by default. This allows an attacker to exploit the implicit trust and masquerade as a legitimate LDAP directory service.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must reside on the same local subnet (broadcast domain) as the target FortiOS device. By leveraging techniques such as ARP spoofing or local DNS hijacking, the attacker intercepts the LDAP authentication traffic initiated by FortiOS. If FortiOS is configured to use cleartext LDAP (TCP 389) or fails to validate the server's SSL/TLS certificate, the attacker's rogue LDAP server can capture sensitive user credentials transmitted during the authentication process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As this vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and listed in the CISA KEV catalog, it poses a severe threat to enterprise networks. Successful exploitation allows adversaries to harvest domain credentials, potentially leading to lateral movement, privilege escalation, and full compromise of the Active Directory (AD) infrastructure, resulting in significant operational disruption.
