Netis WF2419 Router tracert Diagnostic Tool OS Command Injection Remote Code Execution (CVE-2019-19356)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTNetis WF2419 router firmware versions V1.2.31805 and V2.2.36123.
Authenticated attackers can execute arbitrary system commands with root privileges via the tracert diagnostic tool, leading to complete device compromise.
Apply the latest secure firmware update, disable remote WAN management access, and enforce strong administrator credentials.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Download the latest secure firmware version from the official Netis support portal and perform a manual upgrade. Below is a conceptual command-line representation of downloading the firmware:
# 1. Download the latest secure firmware image
wget http://www.netis-systems.com/files/firmware/WF2419/WF2419_latest_firmware.bin
# 2. Apply the firmware update via the device's administration interface
# (It is highly recommended to perform this upload via the Web GUI 'Firmware Upgrade' menu)2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be applied immediately, restrict access to the web management interface from the WAN side and limit administration access to trusted internal IP addresses only.
# Block external WAN access to the web management ports (e.g., port 80/8080) using iptables
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 8080 -j DROP
# Allow access only from a trusted internal administrator IP (e.g., 192.168.1.100)
iptables -A INPUT -s 192.168.1.100 -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect web server access logs for command injection patterns within diagnostic requests, and verify the current running firmware version:
# Search web access logs for command injection characters in tracert requests
grep -Ei 'tracert.*(%3B|;|%7C|\||%60|`|\&)' /var/log/lighttpd/access.log
# Check the running firmware version of the Netis router to identify vulnerability exposure
curl -s http://192.168.1.1/ | grep -E 'V1.2.31805|V2.2.36123'Stop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2019-19356) is an OS Command Injection (CWE-78) vulnerability located within the web management interface of the Netis WF2419 router. The 'tracert' diagnostic utility on the administration page fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before passing it to the system shell for execution. Due to this lack of input validation, malicious shell metacharacters appended to the input are executed directly by the underlying operating system.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first authenticate to the router's web management interface. Once authenticated, the attacker navigates to the network diagnostics section and inputs a payload containing command separators (such as ';', '&', or '|') followed by arbitrary shell commands into the 'tracert' target field. For instance, submitting '8.8.8.8; id' causes the backend system to execute 'tracert 8.8.8.8; id'. Because the diagnostic utility runs with root privileges, the injected commands are executed with administrative authority, granting the attacker full control over the device.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As this vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and listed in the CISA KEV catalog, it poses a severe threat to network infrastructure. A compromised router allows attackers to intercept or mirror internal network traffic, perform DNS hijacking to redirect users to malicious sites, or enlist the device into botnets for distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) campaigns. It also serves as an entry point for lateral movement into the internal corporate network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Netis WF2419 is vulnerable to authenticated Remote Code Execution (RCE) as root through the router Web management page. The vulnerability has been found in firmware version V1.2.31805 and V2.2.36123. After one is connected to this page, it is possible to execute system commands as root through the tracert diagnostic tool because of lack of user input sanitizing.
