Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2019-16759) is a critical code injection vulnerability (CWE-94) residing in the routing and template rendering mechanism of vBulletin 5.x. vBulletin provides a widget rendering feature via the ajax/render/widget_php route. The root cause lies in the lack of input validation and sanitization for the widgetConfig[code] parameter. This allows an attacker to inject arbitrary PHP code, which is subsequently passed to an internal evaluation engine (such as eval()) and executed on the server side.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTTP POST or GET request to the target vBulletin site using the routing path index.php?routestring=ajax/render/widget_php. By populating the widgetConfig[code] parameter with malicious PHP payloads (e.g., print shell_exec('id');), the attacker forces the application to execute the payload during the widget rendering process. Because this endpoint does not require authentication, any remote attacker can execute arbitrary commands and view the output directly in the HTTP response.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.8 (Critical) and its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability poses an extreme risk to organizations running legacy vBulletin forums. Successful exploitation grants the attacker immediate command execution under the context of the web server user (e.g., www-data). This can lead to database credential theft, exposure of sensitive user data, deployment of persistent web shells, lateral movement within the internal network, and potential ransomware deployment.
