Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome prior to version 78.0.3904.87

Impact

A remote attacker can exploit heap corruption via a crafted HTML page to execute arbitrary code on the target system

Mitigation

Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable version (78.0.3904.87 or higher)

Affected Products & Version Scope

Google Chrome prior to 78.0.3904.87 (All desktop platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

To upgrade Google Chrome to the latest secure version on Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux systems, execute the following commands:

bash
# Update package lists and upgrade Google Chrome to the latest stable version
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, enforce Chrome's security sandbox and restrict access to untrusted websites using Group Policy Objects (GPO) or registry settings.

powershell
# Force verify Chrome Sandbox status via Windows Registry
Get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Name 'SandboxMode' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following script to audit the installed Google Chrome version and verify if the system is vulnerable.

bash
# Script to check installed Chrome version and determine vulnerability status
CHROME_VERSION=$(google-chrome --version | awk '{print $3}')
REQUIRED_VERSION='78.0.3904.87'
if [ '$(printf '%s\
' "$REQUIRED_VERSION" "$CHROME_VERSION" | sort -V | head -n1)' != "$REQUIRED_VERSION" ]; then
  echo '[WARNING] Current Chrome version ('$CHROME_VERSION') is vulnerable to CVE-2019-13720. Immediate update required.'
else
  echo '[INFO] Current Chrome version ('$CHROME_VERSION') is secure.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2019-13720) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) memory corruption flaw residing in the WebAudio component of Google Chrome. The WebAudio API handles high-performance audio operations in the browser, dynamically managing the lifecycle of audio nodes and contexts. A design flaw in object lifetime management allows the browser to reference and operate on an audio object that has already been deallocated from memory, leading to a use-after-free condition.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted HTML page containing malicious JavaScript. When a victim visits the page, the script triggers the WebAudio API to allocate and asynchronously free specific audio nodes. By manipulating the heap layout (e.g., via heap spraying), the attacker fills the freed memory space with controlled payloads. When the browser attempts to reuse the dangling pointer of the freed object, it executes attacker-controlled virtual table (vtable) functions, leading to arbitrary code execution (RCE).

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a vulnerability listed in the CISA KEV catalog, this flaw has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows an attacker to compromise the endpoint system with the privileges of the browser process. This can serve as an initial entry point into the corporate network, leading to data exfiltration, ransomware deployment, and lateral movement, posing a severe threat to business continuity.
