Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTFirefox ESR < 60.7.1, Firefox < 67.0.3, and Thunderbird < 60.7.2
Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause an exploitable crash via crafted web content, with active exploitation observed in the wild
Immediately update Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird to the latest patched versions (Firefox 67.0.3+, Firefox ESR 60.7.1+, Thunderbird 60.7.2+)
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Update Firefox and Thunderbird immediately using your system package manager to mitigate the vulnerability.
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install -y firefox thunderbird
# For RHEL/Rocky Linux-based systems
sudo dnf upgrade -y firefox thunderbird2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, disable JIT compilation in Firefox to mitigate the attack vector. Note that this may degrade JavaScript execution performance.
# Append JIT disabling preferences to the user.js configuration file
echo "user_pref('javascript.options.ion', false);" >> ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/user.js
echo "user_pref('javascript.options.baselinejit', false);" >> ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/user.js3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Run the following script to audit the installed versions of Firefox and Thunderbird across your Linux endpoints.
#!/usr/bin/env bash
# Audit script for Mozilla software versions
echo '[*] Auditing Mozilla Software Versions...'
if command -v firefox >/dev/null 2>&1; then
FF_VER=$(firefox --version | awk '{print $3}')
echo "[-] Installed Firefox Version: $FF_VER"
else
echo '[+] Firefox is not installed.'
fi
if command -v thunderbird >/dev/null 2>&1; then
TB_VER=$(thunderbird --version | awk '{print $3}')
echo "[-] Installed Thunderbird Version: $TB_VER"
else
echo '[+] Thunderbird is not installed.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2019-11707) is a critical type confusion vulnerability (CWE-843) residing in Mozilla's Spidermonkey JavaScript engine during the handling of Array.pop operations. To optimize execution speed, the JIT (Just-In-Time) compiler makes assumptions about the types of objects in a layout. However, due to a logical flaw in how Array.pop manipulates array elements, the engine fails to properly validate the object type after modification. This leads to a mismatch between the assumed type and the actual memory layout of the object.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by enticing a user to visit a malicious website or open a specially crafted HTML email. When the JIT compiler optimizes the code containing Array.pop, the attacker triggers a type confusion by dynamically altering the array's structure or prototype chain. This allows the attacker to bypass memory safety protections, achieving arbitrary memory read/write primitives. Ultimately, this primitive is leveraged to execute arbitrary shellcode within the context of the browser process, often chained with a sandbox escape to compromise the host operating system.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability with an EPSS score of 0.3795, this flaw has been actively exploited in targeted attacks in the wild. In an enterprise environment, a single employee visiting an untrusted site using an unpatched browser can lead to complete endpoint compromise. This poses a severe threat to business continuity, potentially serving as an initial entry point for ransomware deployment, lateral movement, and sensitive data exfiltration.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A type confusion vulnerability can occur when manipulating JavaScript objects due to issues in Array.pop. This can allow for an exploitable crash. We are aware of targeted attacks in the wild abusing this flaw. This vulnerability affects Firefox ESR < 60.7.1, Firefox < 67.0.3, and Thunderbird < 60.7.2.
