MikroTik RouterOS SMB Service Unauthenticated Remote Code Execution (RCE) Vulnerability (CVE-2018-7445) Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAll architectures and devices running MikroTik RouterOS before versions 6.41.3 or 6.42rc27
Unauthenticated remote attackers can trigger a buffer overflow via crafted NetBIOS session requests, leading to full remote code execution with administrative privileges
Immediately upgrade RouterOS to the latest stable release (6.41.3+ or 6.42rc27+) and disable the SMB service if it is not business-critical
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Upgrade MikroTik RouterOS to the latest stable version (6.41.3 or higher) to resolve the vulnerability. Execute the following commands via the CLI terminal:
# Check for the latest updates
/system package update check-for-updates
# Download the update and reboot the device to apply the patch
/system package update download
/system reboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, disable the SMB service entirely. If SMB is required, restrict access to trusted IP addresses using firewall rules.
# 1. Disable the SMB service (Highly Recommended)
/ip smb set enabled=no
# 2. Restrict SMB ports (TCP 139, 445) via Firewall
/ip firewall filter
add chain=input protocol=tcp dst-port=139,445 src-address-list=!TRUSTED_IPS action=drop comment='Block unauthorized SMB access'3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the current RouterOS version and check whether the SMB service is enabled on the device.
# Print system resource and version details
/system resource print
# Check SMB service status
/ip smb printStop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2018-7445) is a critical buffer overflow in the SMB (Server Message Block) service of MikroTik RouterOS. The root cause lies in the improper validation of input length when the SMB service processes NetBIOS session request messages. Because the service copies incoming data into a fixed-size buffer without verifying its boundaries, an attacker can overflow the buffer and corrupt the adjacent memory space.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker targets the SMB service ports (TCP 139 or 445) on a vulnerable MikroTik device. Since the buffer overflow occurs during the processing of NetBIOS session requests before any authentication takes place, the attacker does not need valid credentials to exploit this flaw. By sending a specially crafted NetBIOS session request packet, the attacker overwrites the stack or heap memory, hijacks the execution flow, and redirects it to an injected shellcode, achieving full system compromise.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
MikroTik routers are widely deployed as core gateways in enterprise networks and ISP infrastructures. This vulnerability is highly critical, as evidenced by its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog and an EPSS score exceeding 0.65. Successful exploitation allows complete control over the router, enabling attackers to perform lateral movement, intercept or redirect network traffic, modify DNS settings, or enlist the device into botnets, posing severe risks to business continuity and data confidentiality.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A buffer overflow was found in the MikroTik RouterOS SMB service when processing NetBIOS session request messages. Remote attackers with access to the service can exploit this vulnerability and gain code execution on the system. The overflow occurs before authentication takes place, so it is possible for an unauthenticated remote attacker to exploit it. All architectures and all devices running RouterOS before versions 6.41.3/6.42rc27 are vulnerable.
