Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

SAP CRM versions 7.01, 7.02, 7.30, 7.31, 7.33, and 7.54

Impact

Attackers can bypass path validation using directory traversal sequences to upload malicious JSP files, leading to arbitrary Remote Code Execution (RCE)

Mitigation

Apply SAP Security Note 2547431 immediately and implement WAF rules to block directory traversal patterns (../)

Affected Products & Version Scope

SAP CRM versions 7.01, 7.02, 7.30, 7.31, 7.33, 7.54

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Apply the official security patch by implementing SAP Security Note 2547431 through the SAP Support Portal. Ensure that the corresponding Support Packages for your SAP CRM components are updated.

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, configure your Web Application Firewall (WAF) or reverse proxy to block directory traversal sequences and restrict execution of uploaded scripts.

nginx
# Nginx configuration to block directory traversal and restrict JSP execution
server {
    listen 443 ssl;
    server_name sap-crm.example.com;

    # Block requests containing directory traversal sequences
    if ($request_uri ~* '(\.\./|\.\.\\)') {
        return 403 'Access Denied: Directory Traversal Detected';
    }

    # Restrict access to JSP execution in public upload directories
    location ~* ^/sap/bc/.*\.jsp$ {
        deny all;
    }
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following commands to audit SAP access logs for traversal attempts and scan the web root for unauthorized JSP files.

bash
# Search for directory traversal patterns in SAP log files
LOG_PATH='/usr/sap/usr/sap/trans/log'
WEB_DIR='/usr/sap/CC1/JC00/j2ee/cluster/apps/default/webroot'

echo 'Scanning logs for traversal patterns...'
grep -ri '\.\./' ${LOG_PATH}/*.log 2>/dev/null

echo 'Scanning web root for recently modified JSP files...'
find ${WEB_DIR} -type f -name '*.jsp' -mtime -30 -print

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2018-2380) in SAP CRM arises from insufficient validation of user-supplied path information. The application's file APIs fail to properly sanitize input containing 'traverse to parent directory' sequences (such as '../'). This allows authenticated or unauthorized users to escape the designated directory boundaries and write files to arbitrary locations on the server's filesystem.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker exploits this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTTP request to a vulnerable SAP CRM endpoint. By manipulating parameters associated with file paths and names, the attacker injects directory traversal sequences (e.g., '../../') along with malicious payload content (such as a JSP web shell). Because the backend API processes these sequences without validation, the web shell is written directly into the web document root. The attacker then accesses the uploaded JSP file via a direct URL, executing arbitrary OS commands under the privileges of the SAP service account.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability, CVE-2018-2380 has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation grants attackers full control over the SAP CRM application server, leading to unauthorized access to sensitive customer relationship data, intellectual property, and financial records. It also serves as an entry point for lateral movement within the corporate network.
