Google Chrome V8 Engine Type Confusion Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2018-17463)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTGoogle Chrome versions prior to 70.0.3538.64 and applications utilizing vulnerable V8 engine releases
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code within the browser renderer sandbox by enticing a user to visit a specially crafted HTML page
Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable version (70.0.3538.64 or higher) and rebuild V8-dependent frameworks
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
To upgrade Google Chrome to the patched version on Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux distributions, execute the following commands:
# Update package repositories and upgrade Google Chrome
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y
# Verify that the installed version is 70.0.3538.64 or higher
google-chrome --version2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, mitigate the risk by disabling JIT compilation optimizations in V8 to prevent TurboFan from generating vulnerable optimized code.
# Launch Google Chrome with JIT optimization disabled
google-chrome --js-flags='--no-opt' --disable-gpu3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following script to audit endpoint systems and identify vulnerable installations of Google Chrome:
#!/bin/bash
# Audit script to detect vulnerable Chrome installations
if command -v google-chrome &> /dev/null; then
CURRENT_VERSION=$(google-chrome --version | awk '{print $3}')
REQUIRED_VERSION='70.0.3538.64'
# Compare versions
if [ '$(printf "%s\
%s" "$REQUIRED_VERSION" "$CURRENT_VERSION" | sort -V | head -n1)' != "$REQUIRED_VERSION" ]; then
echo '[WARNING] Vulnerable Chrome version detected: '$CURRENT_VERSION
echo '[ACTION] Upgrade to version '$REQUIRED_VERSION' or higher immediately.'
else
echo '[OK] Secure Chrome version in use: '$CURRENT_VERSION
fi
else
echo '[INFO] Google Chrome is not installed on this system.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability is a critical Type Confusion flaw residing in the TurboFan optimization compiler of Google's V8 JavaScript engine. During the optimization pipeline, TurboFan performs 'side-effect' analysis to eliminate redundant operations. However, V8 incorrectly annotated the side effects of certain built-in functions, such as Object.create. The compiler erroneously assumed that these operations did not alter the structure (Map) of the target object, leading to a mismatch between the compiler's static assumptions and the actual runtime memory layout.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can exploit this by crafting JavaScript code that triggers TurboFan optimization on a function containing Object.create or similar operations. Because the compiler assumes no side effects occur, it optimizes away subsequent Map checks. When the optimized code accesses object properties, it uses outdated memory offsets based on the old Map. This allows the attacker to achieve an out-of-bounds memory access, construct arbitrary read/write primitives within the V8 heap, and ultimately execute arbitrary shellcode inside the renderer process.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability with an EPSS score exceeding 0.84, this flaw has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation allows complete compromise of the browser renderer process. While the attacker is initially confined to the renderer sandbox, this vulnerability is frequently chained with OS kernel or privilege escalation exploits to escape the sandbox, compromise the host operating system, and establish a persistent foothold within the corporate network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Incorrect side effect annotation in V8 in Google Chrome prior to 70.0.3538.64 allowed a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside a sandbox via a crafted HTML page.
