Google Chrome V8 Complex Species Handling Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2017-5030)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTGoogle Chrome prior to 57.0.2987.98 for desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) and prior to 57.0.2987.108 for Android
Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code within the context of the browser renderer process or bypass sandbox boundaries via a crafted HTML page
Immediately update Google Chrome to the latest stable channel release (57.0.2987.98 / 108 or higher)
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Update Google Chrome to the latest version using the system package manager on Linux environments.
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y
# For RedHat/CentOS/Rocky Linux-based systems
sudo yum update google-chrome-stable -y2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, enforce strict browser policies to restrict access to untrusted external sites and ensure sandbox features are strictly enabled.
# Verify that Chrome is running with sandbox enabled (never use --no-sandbox)
ps aux | grep chrome | grep -v 'no-sandbox'
# Deploy enterprise policy to restrict untrusted domains (Linux example)
sudo mkdir -p /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed
echo "{
'URLBlocklist': ['*'],
'URLAllowlist': ['https://*.internal.corp.com']
}" | sudo tee /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed/policy.json3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following script to audit the installed Google Chrome version and identify if the system is vulnerable to CVE-2017-5030.
#!/bin/bash
# Audit script for Google Chrome vulnerability status
if command -v google-chrome &> /dev/null; then
CURRENT_VER=$(google-chrome --version | awk '{print $3}')
echo '[+] Current Chrome Version: '$CURRENT_VER
# Compare with patched version 57.0.2987.98
PATCHED_VER='57.0.2987.98'
if [ '$(printf "%s\
%s" "$PATCHED_VER" "$CURRENT_VER" | sort -V | head -n1)' != '$PATCHED_VER' ]; then
echo '[-] WARNING: System is VULNERABLE to CVE-2017-5030. Upgrade required.'
else
echo '[+] System is secure (patched version or newer installed).'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2017-5030) exists in the V8 JavaScript engine of Google Chrome due to incorrect handling of complex 'species' (Symbol.species) constructors. When built-in array methods like Array.prototype.map instantiate a new array, they query the Symbol.species property. If a developer-defined getter modifies the array's structure or size during this callback, V8 fails to track the dynamic type (Map) transition correctly, leading to Type Confusion and Out-of-Bounds Read (CWE-125) conditions.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can craft a malicious HTML page containing JavaScript that overrides the Symbol.species getter. When the victim visits the page, the script triggers an array operation where the getter callback resizes the underlying array buffer. Because the V8 JIT compiler (TurboFan) optimizes the code assuming a static array layout, it accesses memory outside the newly allocated boundaries. This allows the attacker to leak sensitive memory addresses and construct a read/write primitive to execute arbitrary shellcode.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability with an EPSS score of 0.4063, this flaw has been actively exploited in the wild. Successful exploitation bypasses standard browser security controls, potentially leading to endpoint compromise, credential theft, and lateral movement within corporate networks if the browser process is chained with a sandbox escape vulnerability.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Incorrect handling of complex species in V8 in Google Chrome prior to 57.0.2987.98 for Linux, Windows, and Mac and 57.0.2987.108 for Android allowed a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code via a crafted HTML page.
