Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

HP ProCurve Manager (PCM) 3.20/4.0, PCM+ 3.20/4.0, Identity Driven Manager (IDM) 4.0, and Application Lifecycle Management.

Impact

Unauthenticated remote attackers can execute arbitrary code with system privileges by sending a specially crafted marshalled object.

Mitigation

Restrict external access to the vulnerable EJBInvokerServlet and JMXInvokerServlet endpoints and apply official security patches.

Affected Products & Version Scope

HP ProCurve Manager (PCM) 3.20 and 4.0, PCM+ 3.20 and 4.0, Identity Driven Manager (IDM) 4.0, and Application Lifecycle Management

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Apply the official security updates provided by HP to patch the vulnerable components. If patching is not immediately feasible, implement the following workaround configurations.

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

Block external access to the vulnerable servlet endpoints using a reverse proxy or web server configuration.

nginx
# Nginx Reverse Proxy Configuration: Block Invoker Servlets
server {
    listen 80;
    server_name your-hp-manager-host;

    location ~* /(invoker|EJBInvokerServlet|JMXInvokerServlet) {
        deny all;
        return 403;
    }
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Audit the application server access logs for suspicious POST requests targeting the invoker servlets.

bash
# Search JBoss/Apache access logs for invoker servlet access attempts
grep -Ei 'POST .*(EJBInvokerServlet|JMXInvokerServlet)' /var/log/jboss/*.log

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability stems from a misconfiguration in the embedded JBoss application server within HP ProCurve Manager and related identity management solutions. The EJBInvokerServlet and JMXInvokerServlet endpoints are exposed to the public without proper authentication or authorization controls. This allows remote attackers to submit arbitrary marshalled Java objects via HTTP POST requests, leading to insecure deserialization and arbitrary code execution (CWE-94).

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker scans the target system for the presence of /invoker/EJBInvokerServlet or /invoker/JMXInvokerServlet. Once identified, the attacker crafts a malicious serialized Java object designed to execute system commands and transmits it within the HTTP POST request body. The application server deserializes the incoming payload without validation, triggering the execution of the embedded payload in the context of the application server process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS score of 9.8 and inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability represents a severe threat. Successful exploitation grants full administrative control over critical network management and identity management infrastructure. Attackers can leverage this access to pivot deeper into the internal enterprise network, compromising the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the entire infrastructure.
