Adobe Flash Player ExternalInterface ActionScript Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2013-0648, CISA KEV)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAdobe Flash Player versions before 10.3.183.67 and 11.x before 11.6.602.171 on Windows and Mac OS X, and before 11.2.202.273 on Linux
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code and gain full control of the target system by enticing users to load a specially crafted SWF file
Immediately uninstall Adobe Flash Player from all endpoints and servers, or disable Flash execution within web browsers and document viewers
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Since Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL), the recommended remediation is complete removal. To purge legacy Flash Player packages on Red Hat/CentOS/RHEL systems, execute the following:
# Remove Flash Player packages on RHEL/CentOS systems
sudo yum remove -y flash-plugin nspluginwrapper2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate uninstallation is not feasible, enforce a system-wide policy to block Flash execution. Below is a PowerShell command to disable Flash Player in Internet Explorer/Edge via the Windows Registry.
# Disable Adobe Flash Player in Internet Explorer via Registry
New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer' -Name 'VersionManager' -Force
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\VersionManager' -Name 'EnableFlash' -PropertyType DWord -Value 0 -Force3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following script to scan Windows systems for active Flash Player ActiveX or NPAPI DLLs that may still be registered.
# Search for Flash Player DLLs in common system directories
Get-ChildItem -Path 'C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\*', 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\*' -Include *.ocx, *.dll -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object FullName, Length, LastWriteTimeBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2013-0648) is a memory corruption flaw residing within the ExternalInterface ActionScript functionality of Adobe Flash Player. The ExternalInterface API enables communication between the Flash runtime (SWF) and its hosting container, such as a web browser's JavaScript engine. Due to insufficient input validation and improper memory management during the serialization/deserialization of data passed via ExternalInterface, a specially crafted SWF file can trigger memory corruption.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
In-the-wild exploitation of CVE-2013-0648 typically involved drive-by download attacks and spear-phishing campaigns. Attackers host a malicious SWF file on a compromised website or embed it within document formats that support Flash rendering. When a victim visits the malicious page or opens the document, the Flash Player engine processes the crafted ExternalInterface calls, corrupts the memory heap, hijacks the execution flow, and executes arbitrary shellcode under the context of the running process.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS score of 8.8 (High) and its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability poses a severe threat to legacy environments. Successful exploitation allows complete system compromise, enabling attackers to establish persistence, exfiltrate sensitive business data, or deploy ransomware within the internal network.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Unspecified vulnerability in the ExternalInterface ActionScript functionality in Adobe Flash Player before 10.3.183.67 and 11.x before 11.6.602.171 on Windows and Mac OS X, and before 10.3.183.67 and 11.x before 11.2.202.273 on Linux, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted SWF content, as exploited in the wild in February 2013.
