Adobe Flash Player Remote Code Execution (RCE) Vulnerability (CVE-2012-1535) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAdobe Flash Player before 11.3.300.271 on Windows and Mac OS X, and before 11.2.202.238 on Linux
Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via crafted SWF content, which has been actively exploited in the wild
Immediately uninstall legacy Adobe Flash Player from all endpoints or disable Flash execution within web browsers and office applications
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Since Adobe Flash Player is officially retired, the recommended action is complete removal. Use the following commands to purge Flash Player from your systems.
# Windows: PowerShell command to silently uninstall Adobe Flash Player active instances
$flashApps = Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Product | Where-Object { $_.Name -like '*Adobe Flash Player*' }
foreach ($app in $flashApps) {
Write-Output 'Removing legacy software: $($app.Name)'
$app.Uninstall() | Out-Null
}# Linux (RHEL/CentOS): Remove Adobe Flash Player packages
sudo yum remove flash-plugin nspluginwrapper -y2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate uninstallation is not feasible due to legacy dependencies, enforce strict browser policies to block Flash execution.
# Linux: Block Flash execution globally in Google Chrome via policy file
sudo mkdir -p /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed
echo '{ 'DefaultPluginsSetting': 2, 'PluginsAllowedForUrls': }' | sudo tee /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed/block_flash.json3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Run the following script to scan for legacy Flash Player binaries and verify their versions on Linux systems.
# Scan for libflashplayer.so and extract version metadata
find /usr/lib/ /usr/lib64/ -name 'libflashplayer.so' 2>/dev/null | while read -r filepath; do
echo 'Detected Flash binary at: '$filepath
strings '$filepath' | grep -i 'LNX ' | head -n 1

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2012-1535) is an input validation (CWE-20) and code injection (CWE-94) flaw in Adobe Flash Player. It occurs when the Flash Player engine parses and processes specially crafted Shockwave Flash (.swf) files. Due to improper memory management and object handling within the parsing module, processing a malicious SWF file triggers memory corruption, allowing attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the running application.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
In August 2012, threat actors actively exploited this vulnerability in the wild by embedding malicious SWF content inside Microsoft Word documents (.doc). When a victim opens the rigged Word document, the application automatically loads the embedded Flash ActiveX control to render the SWF content. This triggers the vulnerability in the underlying Flash Player library, executing the attacker's shellcode silently in the background and granting them unauthorized access to the host system.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability with a high EPSS score (0.7038), this flaw represents a significant threat to legacy environments. Successful exploitation allows full system compromise, potentially leading to lateral movement, data exfiltration, and ransomware deployment. Since Adobe Flash Player has reached End-of-Life (EOL), any remaining installations pose an unmitigated risk to enterprise infrastructure.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Unspecified vulnerability in Adobe Flash Player before 11.3.300.271 on Windows and Mac OS X and before 11.2.202.238 on Linux allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via crafted SWF content, as exploited in the wild in August 2012 with SWF content in a Word document.
