Sun xVM VirtualBox Kernel Driver (VBoxDrv.sys) Local Privilege Escalation (CVE-2008-3431)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWindows host systems running Sun xVM VirtualBox versions prior to 1.6.4.
Local attackers can execute arbitrary code with kernel-level privileges (SYSTEM), leading to a complete compromise of the host operating system.
Immediately upgrade VirtualBox to version 1.6.4 or later, and restrict access permissions to the VBoxDrv device driver.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to upgrade VirtualBox to version 1.6.4 or later. Use the Windows Package Manager (Winget) or download the latest installer from the official vendor website.
# Upgrade VirtualBox using Windows Package Manager (Winget)
winget upgrade --id Oracle.VirtualBox2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be applied immediately, disable the vulnerable driver service or restrict access to prevent exploitation.
# Stop and disable the VBoxDrv service if virtual machines are not actively required
sc.exe query VBoxDrv
sc.exe stop VBoxDrv
sc.exe config VBoxDrv start= disabled3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Run the following PowerShell script to verify the presence and version of the VBoxDrv.sys driver on the host system.
# Check VBoxDrv.sys file version and path
$DriverPath = '${env:SystemRoot}\System32\drivers\VBoxDrv.sys'
if (Test-Path $DriverPath) {
$FileVersion = (Get-Item $DriverPath).VersionInfo.FileVersion
Write-Host 'Detected VBoxDrv.sys Version:' $FileVersion
# Alert if the version is older than 1.6.4
if ([System.Version]$FileVersion -lt [System.Version]'1.6.4') {
Write-Warning 'Vulnerable VirtualBox driver detected! Immediate upgrade required.'
} else {
Write-Host 'Driver version is secure.' -ForegroundColor Green
}
} else {
Write-Host 'VBoxDrv.sys driver is not installed on this system.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability exists within the VBoxDrvNtDeviceControl function of the VBoxDrv.sys kernel-mode driver in Sun xVM VirtualBox. The function utilizes the METHOD_NEITHER buffering method for handling Input/Output Control (IOCTL) requests. Under METHOD_NEITHER, the I/O manager does not validate the user-space buffer addresses, leaving the responsibility of validation entirely to the driver. VBoxDrv.sys fails to properly validate the buffer addresses associated with the Irp (I/O Request Packet) object, allowing a local user to pass arbitrary kernel-space addresses.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, a local attacker opens a handle to the \\.\VBoxDrv device interface. The attacker then invokes the DeviceIoControl API with a specific IOCTL code, passing a crafted kernel address and payload. Because the driver lacks proper validation of the input address, it performs write or execution operations on the specified kernel memory space. This allows the attacker to corrupt kernel structures or hijack execution flow, escalating privileges from a standard local user to NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a vulnerability listed in the CISA KEV (Known Exploited Vulnerabilities) catalog, this flaw has been actively exploited in the wild. In multi-user or enterprise environments where virtualization is utilized, this vulnerability allows any user with local access to bypass all operating system security boundaries, compromise the host infrastructure, and access sensitive data residing on other virtual machines or the host itself.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
The VBoxDrvNtDeviceControl function in VBoxDrv.sys in Sun xVM VirtualBox before 1.6.4 uses the METHOD_NEITHER communication method for IOCTLs and does not properly validate a buffer associated with the Irp object, which allows local users to gain privileges by opening the \\.\VBoxDrv device and calling DeviceIoControl to send a crafted kernel address.
