Microsoft Defender Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (CVE-2026-33825) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWindows systems with Microsoft Defender enabled and lacking the latest security updates.
An authorized local attacker can exploit insufficient access control granularity to elevate privileges to SYSTEM, potentially disabling security controls.
Immediately update the Microsoft Defender engine and definition files to the latest version, especially as this vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Apply Official Security Patches
Microsoft Defender is typically updated automatically via Windows Update. In enterprise environments, verify that the engine and platform versions are updated to the latest releases.
- Recommended Minimum Engine Version:
1.1.26030.0or higher
PowerShell Command to Verify and Force Update:
# Check Microsoft Defender version details
Get-MpComputerStatus | Select-Object AMRunningMode, AMProductVersion, EngineVersion
# Force immediate signature and engine update
Update-MpSignature2. Temporary Mitigations & Monitoring
If immediate patching is not feasible, implement the following temporary mitigations:
- Enforce Least Privilege: Restrict local administrative privileges to prevent unauthorized users from executing tools that facilitate exploitation.
- Enable Real-Time & Behavior Monitoring: Ensure that Defender's proactive defense mechanisms are fully active.
Set-MpPreference -DisableRealtimeMonitoring $false
Set-MpPreference -DisableBehaviorMonitoring $false- Monitor Event Logs: Audit Windows Event Logs for suspicious service creations, privilege modifications, or unusual process spawning from security-related directories.
Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
Technical Analysis & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-33825) is a Local Privilege Escalation (LPE) vulnerability residing in Microsoft Defender, the default antivirus and endpoint security solution for Windows operating systems.
The root cause of this vulnerability is insufficient granularity of access control (CWE-1220). Microsoft Defender fails to properly isolate and restrict access permissions on certain internal resources, processes, or file system objects. A local attacker with low-privilege access can exploit this lack of granular access control to manipulate resources that are processed by Microsoft Defender's high-privilege (SYSTEM) components.
Exploit Mechanics & Impact
- Local Access: The attacker first gains low-privilege access to the target Windows system (e.g., via phishing or exploiting other initial access vectors).
- Exploiting Access Control Weakness: The attacker targets specific files, registry keys, or symbolic links used by Microsoft Defender that suffer from weak permission configurations, hijacking the execution flow or injecting malicious payloads into high-privilege processes.
- Privilege Escalation: Consequently, the attacker executes arbitrary code with
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEMprivileges.
This vulnerability is listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, indicating active exploitation by threat actors in the wild. Successful exploitation allows attackers to bypass security defenses, harvest credentials, and deploy ransomware or other malware.
