Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN CLI Input Validation Vulnerability Leading to Root Privilege Escalation (CVE-2026-20245)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTCisco Catalyst SD-WAN Controller (formerly vSmart), Manager (formerly vManage), and Validator (formerly vBond)
An authenticated, local attacker with netadmin privileges can execute arbitrary commands as root and push unauthorized configuration changes to edge devices
Immediately upgrade to the fixed software versions recommended by Cisco and verify the configuration integrity of all managed edge devices.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Apply Official Software Patches
Upgrade your Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN infrastructure to the designated fixed releases as documented in the Cisco Security Advisory.
2. Temporary Mitigations & Detection
If immediate patching is not feasible, implement the following controls:
- Least Privilege Enforcement: Audit all administrative accounts and restrict the assignment of the
netadminprivilege to essential personnel only. - Configuration Auditing: Review audit logs on the SD-WAN Manager to detect any unauthorized configuration pushes or template changes to edge devices.
- Restrict CLI Access: Limit SSH/CLI access to the SD-WAN controllers using strict Access Control Lists (ACLs) to trusted management subnets.
# Example: Restricting SSH access via ACL on Cisco SD-WAN

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-20245) exists in the Command Line Interface (CLI) of Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN products due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input and uploaded files (CWE-116).
An attacker with local access and netadmin privileges can exploit this by uploading a crafted file to the system. When processed, the system fails to properly sanitize the input, allowing the attacker to bypass restrictions and execute arbitrary OS commands with elevated root privileges.
Cisco has observed active exploitation in the wild where attackers successfully leveraged this vulnerability to push unauthorized configuration changes to downstream edge devices. This highlights the critical nature of the flaw despite the prerequisite of having administrative credentials.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A vulnerability in the CLI of Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Controller, formerly SD-WAN vSmart, Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager, formerly SD-WAN vManage, and Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Validator, formerly SD-WAN vBond, could allow an authenticated, local attacker to execute arbitrary commands as root by supplying a crafted file to the affected system. This vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by uploading a crafted file to the affected system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to perform command injection attacks on an affected system and elevate their privileges as the root user. To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have netadmin privileges on the affected system. This would require valid credentials or exploitation of or . Cisco is not aware of successful exploitation by other methods. Cisco has observed limited cases where the exploitation of this bug resulted in a configuration change pushed to edge devices. Cisco recommends that customers upgrade to the fixed software that is documented in the that was published on May 14, 2026, and verify the configuration of the edge devices.
