Cisco Unified Communications Products Remote Code Execution and Privilege Escalation Vulnerability Advisory (CVE-2026-20045)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTCisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM), Unified CM SME, Unified CM IM&P, Cisco Unity Connection, and Webex Calling Dedicated Instance
Unauthenticated remote attackers can execute arbitrary OS commands via the web management interface and escalate privileges to root
Apply official Cisco security patches immediately and restrict network access to the web-based management interface
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Refer to the official Cisco Security Advisory to download the appropriate software updates or COP patches for your specific platform. Use the following CLI commands to initiate the upgrade process:
# Initiate system upgrade from an SFTP server containing the official patch
utils system upgrade initiate
# Follow the prompts to enter SFTP server details, credentials, and the patch file path
# Restart the system to apply the patch after successful installation
utils system restart2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict access to the web-based management interface (HTTPS) using network firewalls or Access Control Lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted administrator networks.
# Example Cisco IOS ACL to restrict HTTPS access to the UC management IP (e.g., 10.1.1.10)
ip access-list extended LIMIT_UC_ADMIN
permit tcp 192.168.10.0 0.0.0.255 host 10.1.1.10 eq 443
deny tcp any host 10.1.1.10 eq 443
permit ip any any3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the active software version and inspect the web server logs (Tomcat/Apache access logs) for suspicious HTTP POST requests or command injection patterns.
# Check the currently active software version and installed patches
show version active
# Inspect Tomcat access logs for anomalous requests targeting the web interface
file view activelog tomcat/logs/localhost_access_log.txtBlock Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2026-20045) is a critical remote code execution (RCE) and privilege escalation vulnerability affecting the web-based management interface of Cisco Unified Communications products. The root cause of this vulnerability lies in the improper validation of user-supplied input within HTTP requests (CWE-94). An attacker can bypass input validation controls by sending a sequence of crafted HTTP requests to the web-based management interface.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by targeting the web management port (typically TCP 443) of an affected device. By sending a specifically crafted sequence of HTTP requests, the attacker forces the underlying web application to execute arbitrary operating system commands. A successful initial exploit grants the attacker user-level access to the underlying operating system, which can then be leveraged to elevate privileges to root. Due to the high potential for full system compromise, Cisco has assigned this advisory a Security Impact Rating (SIR) of Critical.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Cisco Unified Communications products serve as the backbone for enterprise voice, video, and collaboration services. A successful compromise allowing root-level access enables attackers to intercept communication sessions, steal sensitive call detail records (CDRs), disrupt critical communication services, or pivot deeper into the internal corporate network. Since this vulnerability is listed in the CISA KEV catalog and actively exploited in the wild, it poses an immediate and severe threat to organizational infrastructure.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A vulnerability in Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM), Cisco Unified Communications Manager Session Management Edition (Unified CM SME), Cisco Unified Communications Manager IM & Presence Service (Unified CM IM&P), Cisco Unity Connection, and Cisco Webex Calling Dedicated Instance could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system of an affected device. This vulnerability is due to improper validation of user-supplied input in HTTP requests. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a sequence of crafted HTTP requests to the web-based management interface of an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to obtain user-level access to the underlying operating system and then elevate privileges to root. Note: Cisco has assigned this security advisory a Security Impact Rating (SIR) of Critical rather than High as the score indicates. The reason is that exploitation of this vulnerability could result in an attacker elevating privileges to root.
