WordPress Web 2.0 Directory Plugin SQL Injection Vulnerability (CVE-2026-15272) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAll versions up to, and including, 2.10.12 of the Web 2.0 Directory plugin for WordPress
Unauthenticated attackers can execute arbitrary SQL queries to extract sensitive database information
Update the plugin to the latest secure version immediately and apply WAF rules to block SQL injection payloads
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
It is highly recommended to upgrade the Web 2.0 Directory plugin to the latest patched version. If you manage your site via WP-CLI, execute the following command:
# Update the plugin using WP-CLI
wp plugin update web-2.0-directory-for-wordpress --activate2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If an immediate update is not feasible, deploy Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to inspect and block malicious payloads targeting the w2dc_level_filter parameter. Below is an example of an Nginx configuration rule to block suspicious requests:
# Block suspicious SQL injection patterns in the query string
if ($query_string ~* "w2dc_level_filter=.*(select|union|sleep|benchmark|and|or)") {
return 403;
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect your web server access logs to identify potential exploitation attempts targeting the vulnerable parameter. Use the following command to search for time-based SQL injection patterns:
# Search access logs for suspicious sleep or benchmark functions in the query parameter
grep -Ei 'w2dc_level_filter.*(sleep|benchmark)' /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/apache2/access.logBlock Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
The Web 2.0 Directory plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to a SQL Injection vulnerability (CVE-2026-15272) via the w2dc_level_filter parameter. This issue stems from insufficient escaping of user-supplied input and a lack of proper preparation on the SQL query execution. Because the parameter is processed within an integer context without surrounding quotes, WordPress's default global sanitization mechanisms (such as addslashes or magic quotes) fail to prevent injection payloads.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by appending malicious SQL syntax to the w2dc_level_filter parameter. Since the input is not enclosed in quotes, the attacker does not need to break out of a string literal, rendering standard escaping ineffective. By injecting time-based conditional payloads (e.g., using SLEEP() functions), an unauthenticated attacker can perform blind SQL injection to systematically extract sensitive data, including password hashes and configuration details, from the database.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability poses a severe risk to data confidentiality. Attackers can exfiltrate sensitive database contents, potentially leading to full administrative takeover of the WordPress site. This can result in unauthorized data exposure, defacement, or the deployment of malicious scripts targeting site visitors, causing significant reputational and operational damage.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
The Web 2.0 Directory plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to time-based SQL Injection via the 'w2dc_level_filter' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.10.12 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. Because the parameter is used in integer context without surrounding quotes, WordPress's built-in addslashes/magic_quotes escaping provides no protection against time-based payloads such as SLEEP-based conditionals.
