Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

GNOME Epiphany browser versions 45.0 through at least 51.x

Impact

Attackers can bypass permission prompts and access the camera and microphone without user consent, leading to audiovisual confidentiality exposure, if the user approves clipboard or website data access

Mitigation

Immediately update Epiphany to the patched version containing upstream commit 480c3648

Affected Products & Version Scope

GNOME Epiphany browser versions 45.0 and later (including 51.x)

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Update the Epiphany (GNOME Web) package to the latest version using your Linux distribution's package manager to apply the fix from upstream commit 480c3648.

bash
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade epiphany-browser -y

# For Fedora/RHEL-based systems
sudo dnf upgrade epiphany -y

# For Flatpak installations
flatpak update org.gnome.Epiphany -y

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, you can restrict device access for the Epiphany browser at the sandbox level using Flatpak overrides.

bash
# Revoke device access permissions for Flatpak-based Epiphany
flatpak override --user --nosocket=fallback-x11 --nodevice=all org.gnome.Epiphany

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following script to check the installed version of Epiphany and determine if the system is running a vulnerable version.

bash
#!/bin/bash
# Script to verify Epiphany installation and vulnerability status

if command -v epiphany &> /dev/null; then
    VERSION=$(epiphany --version | awk '{print $2}')
    echo '[+] Epiphany Browser Version: '$VERSION

    # Compare version (Check if >= 45.0)
    if [ '$(printf '%s\
' '45.0' '$VERSION' | sort -V | head -n1)' = '45.0' ]; then
        echo '[!] Warning: The installed version is within the vulnerable range (>= 45.0). Please apply patches.'
    else
        echo '[+] Safe: The installed version is not vulnerable.'
    fi
else
    echo '[-] Epiphany browser is not installed on this system.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

A logic error in GNOME Epiphany's site permission handling leads to an unauthorized permission bypass (CWE-863). In src/ephy-window.c, the set_permission() function processes and stores the user's Allow/Deny choices following a WebKit permission dialog. Because permission types CLIPBOARD and WEBSITE_DATA_ACCESS are not stored by ephy_permission_is_stored_by_permissions_manager(), the control flow falls into an exception branch. This branch was incorrectly written as else if (EPHY_PERMISSION_TYPE_ACCESS_WEBCAM_AND_MICROPHONE). Since this expression evaluates to a non-zero enum constant, the condition always resolves to true, causing the browser to write EPHY_PERMISSION_PERMIT for both ACCESS_WEBCAM and ACCESS_MICROPHONE for the site origin.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must host a malicious webpage and entice the victim to visit it. The malicious site triggers a prompt requesting access to either the clipboard or website data. Once the victim clicks 'Allow' on this prompt, the flawed logic in set_permission() automatically grants the site permission to access the camera and microphone. Subsequently, the malicious site can invoke the getUserMedia API to capture audio and video streams without displaying any further permission prompts or warnings to the user.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

This vulnerability poses a severe threat to user privacy and corporate confidentiality. If an employee uses an affected version of Epiphany to access an untrusted external site, sensitive conversations or physical office environments could be monitored without authorization. Although user interaction is required to trigger the initial prompt, the high likelihood of users granting clipboard or data access on modern web applications makes this a highly practical and dangerous attack vector.

NVD Original English Description

A logic error in Epiphany's site permission handling can cause camera and microphone access to be granted when the user only approves a different permission. In src/ephy-window.c, set_permission() stores the user's Allow/Deny choice after a WebKit permission dialog. Types CLIPBOARD and WEBSITE_DATA_ACCESS are not stored by ephy_permission_is_stored_by_permissions_manager(), so control fell into an else-if that was written as: } else if (EPHY_PERMISSION_TYPE_ACCESS_WEBCAM_AND_MICROPHONE) { Because that expression is a non-zero enum constant, the branch always ran for those types and wrote EPHY_PERMISSION_PERMIT for both ACCESS_WEBCAM and ACCESS_MICROPHONE for the site origin. The user only saw a Clipboard or Website Data Access dialog. A malicious site that obtains approval for clipboard or third-party storage access can afterwards use getUserMedia without a further camera/microphone prompt, exposing audiovisual confidentiality. Requirements: the victim must visit a malicious page and click Allow on a clipboard or website-data-access prompt. Affected: Epiphany >= 45.0 (bug present at least through 51.x).
