Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

birkir prime versions up to and including 0.4.0.beta.0 at the /graphql endpoint

Impact

Unauthenticated remote attackers can trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) by exhausting server resources via malicious batch queries

Mitigation

Implement strict request size limits, disable or restrict GraphQL batching, and deploy WAF rules to block anomalous payloads

Affected Products & Version Scope

birkir prime versions up to and including 0.4.0.beta.0

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

As of now, no official patch has been released by the maintainer. Users must apply manual code mitigations or restrict access at the network layer.

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

Configure an Nginx reverse proxy or Web Application Firewall (WAF) to limit the maximum request body size and rate-limit requests targeting the /graphql endpoint.

nginx
# Limit request body size and rate limit on Nginx
limit_req_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=graphql_limit:10m rate=2r/s;

server {
    location /graphql {
        client_max_body_size 10k;
        limit_req zone=graphql_limit burst=5 nodelay;
        proxy_pass http://app_backend;
    }
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following command to scan application access logs for potential exploitation attempts characterized by large JSON arrays in POST payloads.

bash
# Search for suspicious batch query patterns in access logs
grep -i -E '\\[.*"query".*"query".*\\]' /var/log/nginx/access.log | head -n 50

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2026-1173) exists in the GraphQL Array Based Query Batch Handler of the birkir prime framework. The root cause is the lack of proper validation and resource limitation on incoming array-based batch queries at the /graphql endpoint, leading to improper resource management (CWE-404).

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An unauthenticated remote attacker can send a single HTTP POST request containing an extremely large JSON array of GraphQL queries to the /graphql endpoint. The server attempts to parse and execute all queries in the batch simultaneously, consuming excessive CPU and memory, which ultimately leads to thread exhaustion or an Out-of-Memory (OOM) crash.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS score of 9.8, this vulnerability poses a critical risk. Since public exploits are available and the vendor has not yet responded to the issue, production environments running vulnerable versions are highly susceptible to targeted downtime, disrupting dependent frontend applications and business operations.

Official Vendor Advisories & References

NVD Original English Description
