Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers (including Microsoft Edge) prior to version 137.0.7151.68

Impact

A remote attacker can trigger heap corruption and potentially execute arbitrary code within the browser renderer process via a crafted HTML page

Mitigation

Immediately update all affected browsers to the latest stable version (137.0.7151.68 or higher) and enforce automatic update policies

Affected Products & Version Scope

Google Chrome versions prior to 137.0.7151.68 (Windows, macOS, Linux) and other Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

To update Google Chrome to the latest secure version on Linux (Ubuntu/Debian-based systems), execute the following commands:

bash
# Update package repositories and upgrade Google Chrome
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install google-chrome-stable -y

# Verify the installed version
google-chrome --version

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible in enterprise environments, you can enforce Renderer Code Integrity and restrict untrusted JavaScript execution via Registry or Group Policy Objects (GPO).

powershell
# Enforce Renderer Code Integrity via PowerShell (Windows)
New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Force
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome' -Name 'RendererCodeIntegrityEnabled' -Value 1 -PropertyType DWord -Force

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Use the following PowerShell script to audit enterprise endpoints and identify vulnerable installations of Google Chrome.

powershell
# PowerShell script to audit Google Chrome version
$chromePath = '${env:ProgramFiles}\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe'
if (Test-Path $chromePath) {
    $versionInfo = [System.Diagnostics.FileVersionInfo]::GetVersionInfo($chromePath)
    $currentVersion = [version]$versionInfo.ProductVersion
    $targetVersion = [version]'137.0.7151.68'

    if ($currentVersion -lt $targetVersion) {
        Write-Host 'WARNING: Vulnerable Chrome version detected:' $currentVersion -ForegroundColor Red
    } else {
        Write-Host 'SECURE: Chrome is up to date:' $currentVersion -ForegroundColor Green
    }
} else {
    Write-Host 'Google Chrome is not installed on this system.' -ForegroundColor Yellow
}

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2025-5419) is an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) and out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) vulnerability in the V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine of Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers. The root cause lies in insufficient bounds validation when the V8 engine optimizes object layouts or manages memory during execution. This flaw allows an attacker to access or overwrite memory locations outside the allocated buffer boundaries, leading to heap corruption.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted HTML page containing malicious JavaScript and enticing users to visit the site (Drive-by Download). When the victim's browser processes the page, the V8 JIT (Just-In-Time) compiler compiles the malicious script, triggering the memory corruption. By leveraging the out-of-bounds read to bypass Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) and the out-of-bounds write to hijack control flow, the attacker can achieve arbitrary code execution within the sandboxed renderer process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

This vulnerability is listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, confirming active exploitation in the wild. Successful exploitation can compromise endpoint workstations, serving as an initial entry point for lateral movement within the corporate network. Even though the browser sandbox limits direct OS access, chaining this with a sandbox escape or local privilege escalation vulnerability could lead to full system compromise, data exfiltration, and ransomware deployment.
