Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Roundcube Webmail versions before 1.5.10 and 1.6.x versions before 1.6.11

Impact

Authenticated remote attackers can trigger PHP Object Deserialization via the manipulated _from parameter, leading to arbitrary Remote Code Execution (RCE) on the host server

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade Roundcube Webmail to the patched versions (1.5.10, 1.6.11, or later)

Affected Products & Version Scope

Roundcube Webmail versions before 1.5.10 and 1.6.x before 1.6.11

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Upgrade your Roundcube Webmail installation to the latest secure release (1.6.11 or 1.5.10).

bash
# Navigate to web directory and download the latest complete release
cd /var/www
wget https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/download/1.6.11/roundcubemail-1.6.11-complete.tar.gz
tar -zxvf roundcubemail-1.6.11-complete.tar.gz

# Run the official upgrade script to apply the patch safely
cd roundcubemail-1.6.11
./bin/installto.sh /var/www/roundcube

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, deploy a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule or web server configuration to block requests containing serialized PHP objects in the _from parameter.

nginx
# Nginx configuration block to block serialized payloads in the _from parameter
location ~* /program/actions/settings/upload\.php {
    if ($args ~* '_from=.*(O%3a|O:|a%3a|a:|s%3a|s:)') {
        return 403;
    }
    try_files $uri =404;
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Scan web server access logs for potential exploitation attempts targeting the _from parameter in upload.php.

bash
# Search access logs for PHP serialization signatures in the _from parameter
grep -Ei 'upload\.php.*_from.*(O:[0-9]+|O%3A[0-9]+)' /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/apache2/access.log 2>/dev/null

# Verify the currently running Roundcube version
grep "RCMAIL_VERSION" /var/www/roundcube/program/include/iniset.php 2>/dev/null

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2025-49113) is a critical PHP Object Deserialization flaw (CWE-502) residing in Roundcube Webmail's settings upload functionality. The root cause lies in the lack of input validation and sanitization of the _from parameter within the program/actions/settings/upload.php script. When an attacker supplies a serialized PHP object via this parameter, the application processes it using the PHP unserialize() function, allowing the instantiation of arbitrary PHP objects and triggering magic methods.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first authenticate to the Roundcube Webmail interface with low-privilege user credentials (PR:L). Once authenticated, the attacker sends a crafted HTTP request targeting upload.php with a malicious serialized PHP payload injected into the _from URL parameter. During deserialization, the PHP engine executes destructor or wakeup magic methods associated with existing classes in the application scope (POP chain), ultimately leading to arbitrary OS command execution under the context of the web server user.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS score of 9.9 (Critical) and active exploitation confirmed by its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability poses an extreme risk to enterprise mail infrastructures. The EPSS score of 0.9949 indicates a near-certain probability of exploitation attempts. Successful exploitation allows full compromise of the mail server, enabling attackers to exfiltrate sensitive communications, hijack user accounts, and pivot into the internal corporate network.
