Ivanti Endpoint Manager Mobile (EPMM) API Authentication Bypass Vulnerability (CVE-2025-4427) Urgent Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTIvanti Endpoint Manager Mobile (EPMM) versions 12.5.0.0 and prior
Unauthenticated remote attackers can bypass authentication via the API component to access protected resources and sensitive data without credentials
Immediately apply the official vendor security patches and restrict external access to the API endpoints
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Administrators must immediately upgrade EPMM to the patched release recommended by Ivanti. Use the following CLI commands on the EPMM appliance to check the version and apply updates:
# Verify the current EPMM software version
show version
# Download and install the latest secure software update\software update install2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be performed immediately, restrict access to the EPMM API endpoints at the network perimeter. Below is an example of restricting API access using an Nginx reverse proxy configuration:
# Nginx configuration to restrict access to sensitive EPMM API paths
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name epmm.company.local;
# Restrict API endpoints to trusted internal IP ranges only
location /mifs/api/ {
allow 10.0.0.0/8;
allow 192.168.1.0/24;
deny all;
proxy_pass https://backend_epmm;
}
}3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect the EPMM access logs for potential indicators of compromise (IoCs) related to unauthorized API access. Use the following command to search for successful API requests that lack proper user context:
# Search access logs for successful API requests without authenticated user context
grep -E '/mifs/.*api/' /var/log/httpd/access_log | grep ' 200 ' | grep -v 'authenticated_user'Stop Exposing VPN Ports to the Internet — Switch to Zero-Trust Access
Eliminate public-facing VPN concentrators and firewall management ports with identity-first Zero-Trust Network Access.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2025-4427) is an authentication bypass flaw in the API component of Ivanti Endpoint Manager Mobile (EPMM, formerly MobileIron). It stems from an insufficient validation mechanism (CWE-288) within the API routing and authentication middleware. Due to this design flaw, the system fails to properly enforce credential verification on specific API endpoints, allowing unauthorized requests to bypass security controls.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending specially crafted HTTP requests directly to the exposed EPMM API endpoints. Because the authentication check is bypassed, the attacker can execute API calls that are normally restricted to authenticated administrators or users. With low attack complexity (AC:L), no privileges required (PR:N), and no user interaction (UI:N), this vulnerability is highly susceptible to automated exploitation. It has been added to the CISA KEV catalog due to active exploitation in the wild.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
EPMM serves as a critical gateway for managing enterprise mobile devices and security policies. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows attackers to harvest sensitive device details, user credentials, and internal network configurations. This exposure can lead to subsequent lateral movement, supply chain attacks, and complete compromise of the enterprise mobility infrastructure.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
An authentication bypass in the API component of Ivanti Endpoint Manager Mobile 12.5.0.0 and prior allows attackers to access protected resources without proper credentials via the API.
