Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Commvault Command Center Innovation Release versions 11.38.0 through 11.38.20.

Impact

Unauthenticated remote attackers can upload malicious ZIP installation packages to execute arbitrary code (RCE) via path traversal and JSP web shell deployment.

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade to patched versions: 11.38.20 with SP38-CU20-433/436 or 11.38.25 with SP38-CU25-434/438 or higher.

Affected Products & Version Scope

Commvault Command Center Innovation Release: 11.38.0 to 11.38.20

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Apply the official security updates immediately.

  • For version 11.38.20: Apply SP38-CU20-433 and SP38-CU20-436
  • For version 11.38.25: Apply SP38-CU25-434 and SP38-CU25-438

Example command to apply the update package on a Linux-based Commvault server:

bash
# Navigate to the Commvault Base directory and execute the package installer
cd /opt/commvault/Base
./cvpkgadd -p /path/to/downloaded/SP38-CU20-433.tar.gz

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict access to the Command Center web interface (default ports 443, 81) using firewalls or security groups to allow only trusted IP addresses.

To block unauthorized upload attempts at the reverse proxy level, use the following Nginx configuration snippet:

nginx
# Block external access to upload endpoints
location ~* /(admin|api)/.*upload.* {
    allow 10.0.0.0/8;
    allow 192.168.0.0/16;
    deny all;
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Run the following commands to inspect your environment for potential indicators of compromise (IoCs) and verify the system status:

bash
# 1. Search for recently created or modified JSP files in the Commvault directory
find /opt/commvault/ -name '*.jsp' -mtime -10 -print

# 2. Scan Commvault logs for directory traversal patterns in upload requests
grep -ri '\.\./' /var/log/commvault/Log_Files/

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2025-34028) is a critical-severity (CVSS 10.0) unauthenticated Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability affecting the Commvault Command Center Innovation Release. The root cause lies in the lack of proper authentication validation (CWE-306) combined with insufficient path validation (CWE-22, Zip Slip) when extracting uploaded ZIP archive files. An unauthenticated actor can upload a crafted ZIP file representing an installation package, which is subsequently extracted by the target server without path sanitization.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

The exploitation flow proceeds as follows: 1) An attacker crafts a malicious ZIP archive containing a JSP web shell, utilizing directory traversal sequences (e.g., '../../') in the file paths. 2) The attacker sends an unauthenticated HTTP request to the installation package upload endpoint of the Command Center. 3) The server processes the upload and extracts the ZIP archive. Due to the lack of path validation, the extraction process escapes the intended directory and writes the JSP file into the web root or another executable directory. 4) The attacker accesses the deployed JSP file via its direct URL, executing arbitrary operating system commands with the privileges of the Commvault application process.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

This vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and is listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Successful exploitation grants the attacker complete control over the Commvault server, which manages critical enterprise backup and recovery infrastructure. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive backed-up data, data destruction, deployment of ransomware, and lateral movement across the internal network, posing an existential threat to business continuity.

Official Vendor Advisories & References

NVD Original English Description

The Commvault Command Center Innovation Release allows an unauthenticated actor to upload ZIP files that represent install packages that, when expanded by the target server, are vulnerable to path traversal vulnerability that can result in Remote Code Execution via malicious JSP. This issue affects Command Center Innovation Release: 11.38.0 to 11.38.20. The vulnerability is fixed in 11.38.20 with SP38-CU20-433 and SP38-CU20-436 and also fixed in 11.38.25 with SP38-CU25-434 and SP38-CU25-438.
