Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

All systems running Sudo versions prior to 1.9.17p1

Impact

A local attacker can exploit the '--chroot' option to force Sudo to load a user-controlled nsswitch.conf file, leading to full root privilege escalation

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade Sudo to version 1.9.17p1 or later, or restrict the use of the chroot option via sudoers configuration

Affected Products & Version Scope

Sudo versions prior to 1.9.17p1

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Update the Sudo package to the latest patched version using your operating system's package manager.

bash
# For Debian / Ubuntu based systems
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade -y sudo

# For RHEL / CentOS / Rocky Linux based systems
sudo dnf clean all && sudo dnf upgrade -y sudo

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If patching cannot be applied immediately, restrict the use of the --chroot argument by modifying the sudoers configuration. Run visudo to safely edit the configuration file.

bash
# Open sudoers configuration and append the following line to disable chroot usage
Defaults !use_chroot

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Verify the installed Sudo version and inspect system authentication logs for any unauthorized or suspicious use of the --chroot option.

bash
# 1. Check the current Sudo version
sudo -V | head -n 1

# 2. Audit authentication logs for suspicious chroot execution
grep -E 'sudo.*--chroot' /var/log/auth.log /var/log/secure 2>/dev/null || echo 'No suspicious chroot usage detected.'

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability (CVE-2025-32463) is a local privilege escalation flaw in the Sudo utility caused by improper control of generation of code or resources (CWE-829) when handling the --chroot option. Sudo allows executing commands within a chroot environment; however, a flaw exists in how it processes the Name Service Switch configuration file (/etc/nsswitch.conf) before fully transitioning into the chroot jail. Sudo incorrectly references the configuration file from a user-controlled directory, allowing local users to manipulate the execution flow.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

A local attacker with low-privilege access can create a malicious directory structure containing a crafted etc/nsswitch.conf file. This malicious configuration is designed to load arbitrary shared libraries (e.g., a custom .so payload). When the attacker executes sudo --chroot pointing to this directory, Sudo (which runs with SetUID root privileges) reads the attacker-controlled nsswitch.conf and loads the specified malicious library into its high-privileged process space, executing arbitrary code as root.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

With a CVSS score of 7.8 (High) and active exploitation confirmed by its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability poses a severe threat to multi-tenant servers, container hosts, and enterprise Linux environments. Successful exploitation grants complete administrative control over the host operating system, bypassing security boundaries, compromising data integrity, and facilitating lateral movement within the network.
