Apple WebKit Out-of-Bounds Write Vulnerability (CVE-2025-24201) Technical Analysis and Emergency Patch Guide (CISA KEV)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTDevices running iOS 15/16/17/18, iPadOS, macOS Sequoia, visionOS, watchOS, and Safari browser
Processing maliciously crafted web content may allow an attacker to break out of the Web Content sandbox and execute arbitrary code, with active exploitation reported in targeted attacks
Immediately apply the official security updates released by Apple, including iOS 18.3.2 and macOS 15.3.2
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Apply the official updates via OTA on your Apple devices. For enterprise macOS environments managed via terminal or MDM, you can force software updates using the following commands:
# List available software updates
softwareupdate -l
# Download and install all critical updates and restart the system
sudo softwareupdate -i -a --restart2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, enable 'Lockdown Mode' on high-risk devices to drastically reduce the WebKit attack surface. Additionally, restrict outbound traffic to untrusted sites using local packet filters.
# Example: Enable PF firewall on macOS to restrict outbound traffic to suspicious destinations
sudo pfctl -E
# Block untrusted external connections by appending rules to /etc/pf.conf3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following script to audit the current macOS version and verify if the system requires immediate patching.
#!/bin/bash
# Audit script for macOS version compliance
CURRENT_VER=$(sw_vers -productVersion)
CURRENT_BUILD=$(sw_vers -buildVersion)
echo '=== macOS Security Compliance Audit ==='
echo "Current Version: $CURRENT_VER (Build: $CURRENT_BUILD)"
if [[ "$CURRENT_VER" == 15.3.[0-1] ]]; then
echo '[WARNING] Vulnerable OS version detected. Upgrade to macOS 15.3.2 or later immediately.'
else
echo '[INFO] System is compliant or requires manual verification for older branches.'
fiBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2025-24201) is an out-of-bounds write issue (CWE-787) residing in Apple's WebKit rendering engine. The root cause is insufficient boundary validation when handling memory buffers during web content rendering. Apple addressed this vulnerability by improving input validation and memory boundary checks to prevent unauthorized actions.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker exploits this vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted malicious web page and enticing a target user to visit it. When the WebKit engine parses the malicious content, it triggers an out-of-bounds write. This allows the attacker to bypass the Web Content sandbox boundaries. Apple noted that this issue has been actively exploited in highly sophisticated targeted attacks against specific individuals on iOS versions prior to iOS 17.2.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS score of 10.0 and its inclusion in the CISA KEV catalog, this vulnerability poses an extreme risk to enterprise environments. Compromise of an employee's mobile device or workstation can serve as an initial entry point for lateral movement, leading to corporate espionage, credential theft, and potential data breaches.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved checks to prevent unauthorized actions. This issue is fixed in Safari 18.3.1, iOS 15.8.4 and iPadOS 15.8.4, iOS 16.7.11 and iPadOS 16.7.11, iOS 18.3.2 and iPadOS 18.3.2, iPadOS 17.7.6, macOS Sequoia 15.3.2, visionOS 2.3.2, watchOS 11.4. Maliciously crafted web content may be able to break out of Web Content sandbox. This is a supplementary fix for an attack that was blocked in iOS 17.2. (Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on versions of iOS before iOS 17.2.).
