Windows Hyper-V NT Kernel Integration VSP Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2025-21334) Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWindows 10, 11, and Windows Server systems with the Hyper-V virtualization role enabled
Local attackers can exploit a Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability to execute arbitrary code with kernel-level (SYSTEM) privileges, leading to complete host compromise
Immediately apply the February 2025 Microsoft Cumulative Security Updates and disable unnecessary Hyper-V services
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
To apply the official security patches from Microsoft, trigger Windows Update or force-install the Latest Cumulative Update (LCU) via PowerShell.
# Install and use the PSWindowsUpdate module to apply all pending security patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -Verbose
Get-WindowsUpdate -AcceptAll -Install -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be performed immediately, disable the Hyper-V feature on non-critical hosts to minimize the attack surface.
# Disable the Hyper-V feature (requires a system restart)
Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V-All -NoRestart
# Stop and disable the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service
Stop-Service -Name vmms -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Set-Service -Name vmms -StartupType Disabled3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify whether Hyper-V is enabled on the system and inspect the event logs for abnormal Hyper-V integration service errors or kernel crashes.
# Check Hyper-V feature status and related driver states
Get-WindowsFeature | Where-Object { $_.Name -like '*Hyper-V*' }
Get-WmiObject Win32_SystemDriver | Where-Object { $_.Name -like '*vmbus*' } | Select-Object Name, DisplayName, State
# Query System Event Logs for Hyper-V Integration errors or warnings
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='System'; ProviderName='Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Integration'; Level=1,2,3} -MaxEvents 50 -ErrorAction SilentlyContinueBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2025-21334) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw residing within the Windows Hyper-V NT Kernel Integration Virtual Service Provider (VSP). The VSP, which facilitates communication between the Hyper-V host and guest operating systems, fails to properly manage the lifecycle of memory objects. When specific virtual channel messages or requests are processed, pointers to previously freed memory locations are not properly nullified, leading to memory corruption when those pointers are subsequently dereferenced.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first gain local access to the target Windows system with low-privilege user credentials. The attacker then crafts and transmits malicious virtualization communication requests to the Hyper-V NT Kernel Integration VSP interface. This triggers the premature release of a specific kernel object. By leveraging heap spraying or similar techniques, the attacker reclaims the freed memory space with controlled data. When the kernel attempts to reuse the stale pointer, it executes the attacker's payload within the Ring 0 context, resulting in an elevation to SYSTEM privileges. This vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and is listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Although categorized as a local privilege escalation (EoP) vulnerability, its impact is severe because it targets the core Hyper-V kernel layer. Achieving SYSTEM privileges allows attackers to bypass all endpoint security controls (such as EDR and antivirus agents). Furthermore, it serves as a critical stepping stone for lateral movement within Active Directory environments, potentially compromising the entire corporate network infrastructure.
