Windows Task Scheduler Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2024-49039) Technical Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAll supported versions of Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server
A local attacker with low privileges can bypass security boundaries via RPC interfaces to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges
Immediately apply the Microsoft November 2024 Security Update and restrict local user privileges
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to apply the November 2024 Microsoft cumulative security updates. Use the following PowerShell commands to automate the update process:
# Install and run Windows Update module to apply the latest cumulative patches
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -SkipPublisherCheck
Get-WindowsUpdate -AcceptAll -Install -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible, restrict access to the Task Scheduler directory and enforce strict local privilege controls to minimize the attack surface.
# Restrict Task Scheduler folder permissions to Administrators and SYSTEM only
icacls 'C:\Windows\System32\Tasks' /inheritance:r /grant:r '*S-1-5-32-544:(OI)(CI)(F)' /grant:r '*S-1-5-18:(OI)(CI)(F)'3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Monitor the Task Scheduler operational logs for suspicious task registrations (Event ID 106) or task executions (Event ID 200) initiated by low-privilege accounts.
# Query Task Scheduler operational logs for recent task registration and execution events
Get-WinEvent -LogName 'Microsoft-Windows-TaskScheduler/Operational' |
Where-Object { $_.Id -eq 106 -or $_.Id -eq 200 } |
Select-Object TimeCreated, Id, Message |
Format-Table -AutoSizeBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
CVE-2024-49039 is an elevation of privilege (EoP) vulnerability in the Windows Task Scheduler service, stemming from improper authentication and validation of RPC (Remote Procedure Call) requests (CWE-287). The vulnerability allows a local attacker running with low privileges (such as inside an AppContainer or a restricted sandbox) to call specific RPC interfaces that fail to properly validate the caller's security context, leading to a scope change (Scope: Changed).
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first gain local execution capabilities on the target system. The attacker executes a specially crafted application designed to communicate directly with the Task Scheduler's RPC endpoint. By passing manipulated parameters, the attacker tricks the Task Scheduler service into executing tasks or registering new jobs under the high-privilege SYSTEM context, effectively bypassing local security boundaries and escalating privileges.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and is listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. With a CVSS score of 8.8, it poses a severe threat to enterprise environments. Attackers who have established an initial foothold can leverage this flaw for lateral movement, domain controller compromise, or full infrastructure takeover, potentially leading to ransomware deployment and catastrophic data breaches.
