Windows Hyper-V Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (CVE-2024-38080) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTWindows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server environments running the Hyper-V virtualization platform
Local attackers with low-privilege access can exploit an integer overflow (CWE-190) to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges, leading to complete host compromise
Immediately apply Microsoft's July 2024 cumulative security updates and restrict local access to virtualization hosts
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
The primary remediation is to apply the official cumulative updates provided by Microsoft. You can force the update installation using PowerShell.
# Install PSWindowsUpdate module and apply the required security updates
Install-Module PSWindowsUpdate -Force -Verbose
Get-WindowsUpdate -KBArticleID KB5040442, KB5040437 -Install -AcceptAll -AutoReboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If immediate patching is not feasible in production environments, restrict access to the Hyper-V management group and temporarily disable the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service.
# Audit and restrict members of the Hyper-V Administrators group
Get-LocalGroupMember -Group 'Hyper-V Administrators'
# Stop and disable Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management Service if not actively needed
Stop-Service -Name 'vmms' -Force
Set-Service -Name 'vmms' -StartupType Disabled3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Use the following commands to verify patch compliance and inspect Hyper-V event logs for anomalous activities.
# Verify if the specific security update (KB) is installed
Get-HotFix | Where-Object { $_.HotFixID -match 'KB5040442' -or $_.HotFixID -match 'KB5040437' }
# Query Hyper-V VMMS administrative logs for critical errors or warnings
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{
LogName = 'Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin'
Level = 1, 2, 3
} -MaxEvents 50 | Select-Object TimeCreated, Id, Message | Format-Table -WrapBlock Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2024-38080) is an integer overflow vulnerability (CWE-190) residing within the Windows Hyper-V virtualization hypervisor kernel. It occurs due to insufficient validation of input buffer sizes when processing memory mapping or virtual device communication (VMBus) requests between guest virtual machines and the host OS. This flaw allows an attacker to trigger a buffer overflow in kernel memory, leading to memory corruption and arbitrary code execution.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must first gain local access to the target Windows system with low-privileged user credentials. The attacker then issues specially crafted API calls or VMBus messages to the Hyper-V hypervisor subsystem. When the hypervisor processes these malformed requests, the integer overflow is triggered, allowing the attacker to hijack the kernel execution flow and elevate privileges to 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM'. This vulnerability has been actively exploited in the wild and is listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
Hyper-V is a foundational component of enterprise virtualization and private cloud infrastructures. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows a complete escape from virtualized isolation, enabling an attacker to compromise the physical host. This poses a severe risk of data theft across other isolated VMs running on the same host, service disruption, and lateral movement to critical infrastructure such as Active Directory domain controllers.
