Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

ownCloud graphapi app versions 0.2.0 to 0.2.0, and 0.3.0 to 0.3.0 (both containerized and non-containerized environments)

Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can access a specific URL to execute phpinfo(), exposing sensitive environment variables including admin passwords, mail server credentials, and license keys

Mitigation

Immediately upgrade the graphapi app to version 0.2.1 or 0.3.1 (or higher), and rotate all potentially exposed credentials

Affected Products & Version Scope

ownCloud graphapi 0.2.x (before 0.2.1) and 0.3.x (before 0.3.1) *Note: Docker containers built before February 2023 are reported to be not vulnerable to credential disclosure, but verification is still highly recommended.

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Upgrade the ownCloud graphapi application to a secure version (0.2.1 or 0.3.1 or higher) using the command-line interface.

bash
# Navigate to ownCloud root directory and upgrade graphapi via occ
cd /var/www/owncloud
sudo -u www-data php occ market:upgrade graphapi

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, block access to the vulnerable file at the web server level or physically remove the file from the directory.

nginx
# Nginx configuration block to deny access to GetPhpInfo.php
location ~* /apps/graphapi/vendor/.*GetPhpInfo\.php$ {
    deny all;
    return 404;
}

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Scan web server access logs to identify potential exploitation attempts targeting the vulnerable endpoint.

bash
# Search access logs for requests targeting GetPhpInfo.php
grep -i 'GetPhpInfo.php' /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/apache2/access.log 2>/dev/null

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability exists in the ownCloud graphapi application due to its reliance on a third-party library, GetPhpInfo.php. This library exposes a publicly accessible URL that, when requested, executes the PHP phpinfo() function. This behavior leads to a CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor) vulnerability, leaking system configurations and environment variables without authentication.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An unauthenticated attacker sends a simple HTTP GET request to the vulnerable endpoint, typically located at http://<owncloud-domain>/apps/graphapi/vendor/microsoft/microsoft-graph/tests/GetPhpInfo.php. The server responds with the full output of phpinfo(). In containerized deployments (such as Docker), sensitive credentials like the ownCloud admin password, database connection strings, and mail server credentials are often passed as environment variables, making them fully visible in the response. Simply disabling the graphapi app in the admin panel does not mitigate the risk, as the physical file remains accessible on the web server.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

This vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and is listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Successful exploitation allows attackers to harvest administrative credentials, leading to full compromise of the ownCloud instance, data exfiltration, or ransomware deployment. Furthermore, compromised mail server credentials can be leveraged to launch secondary phishing campaigns, severely damaging organizational reputation and business continuity.

Official Vendor Advisories & References

NVD Original English Description

An issue was discovered in ownCloud owncloud/graphapi 0.2.x before 0.2.1 and 0.3.x before 0.3.1. The graphapi app relies on a third-party GetPhpInfo.php library that provides a URL. When this URL is accessed, it reveals the configuration details of the PHP environment (phpinfo). This information includes all the environment variables of the webserver. In containerized deployments, these environment variables may include sensitive data such as the ownCloud admin password, mail server credentials, and license key. Simply disabling the graphapi app does not eliminate the vulnerability. Additionally, phpinfo exposes various other potentially sensitive configuration details that could be exploited by an attacker to gather information about the system. Therefore, even if ownCloud is not running in a containerized environment, this vulnerability should still be a cause for concern. Note that Docker containers from before February 2023 are not vulnerable to the credential disclosure.
