Veeam Backup & Replication Authentication Bypass and Credential Exposure (CVE-2023-27532) Security Advisory
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTAll deployments of Veeam Backup & Replication versions 11 and 12 (prior to patched builds).
Unauthenticated remote attackers can obtain encrypted credentials stored in the configuration database, potentially gaining full access to backup infrastructure hosts.
Apply the official security patches immediately, or restrict access to the Veeam Backup Service port (TCP 9401) using firewall rules.
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Download and install the official cumulative patches from Veeam. Use PowerShell to verify the currently installed version before applying the update.
# Check the installed Veeam Backup & Replication version
Get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication' | Select-Object Version2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be performed immediately, restrict access to the Veeam Backup Service port (default TCP 9401) using the Windows Firewall to block unauthorized external connections.
# Block all inbound traffic to TCP port 9401
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName 'Block Veeam TCP 9401' -Direction Inbound -Action Block -Protocol TCP -LocalPort 9401
# Allow inbound traffic to TCP port 9401 only from a trusted backup proxy IP (e.g., 192.168.10.50)
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName 'Allow Trusted Backup Proxy' -Direction Inbound -Action Allow -Protocol TCP -LocalPort 9401 -RemoteAddress '192.168.10.50'3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Inspect the Veeam Backup Service logs for unauthorized connection attempts or suspicious queries targeting port 9401.
# Search Veeam log files for references to port 9401 to identify potential unauthorized access
Get-ChildItem -Path 'C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Backup' -Filter '*.log' -Recurse | Select-String -Pattern '9401' -Context 0,3 | Select-Object -First 50Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot
Protect unpatched Windows, Linux, and macOS workloads against in-memory exploitation and lateral movement with autonomous EDR.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2023-27532) is a critical missing authentication vulnerability (CWE-306) within the internal communication process of Veeam Backup & Replication. The Veeam Backup Service, which listens on TCP port 9401 by default, fails to perform adequate user authentication and authorization checks when handling internal API requests. This architectural flaw allows unauthenticated remote attackers to directly query the service and retrieve encrypted database connection strings and credentials stored in the configuration database.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker begins by scanning the network for exposed TCP port 9401 on target systems. Once identified, the attacker transmits specially crafted API requests mimicking legitimate Veeam service traffic. Because the service does not validate the requester's identity, it responds with the requested configuration details, including encrypted credentials. Although the credentials are encrypted, they can be decrypted using static keys or known decryption routines within the Veeam environment, allowing the attacker to obtain plaintext administrative credentials for hypervisors, backup proxies, and domain controllers.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
This vulnerability is highly critical and is listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog due to active exploitation by ransomware groups and APT actors in the wild. Compromising the backup infrastructure allows adversaries to delete or encrypt backup repositories, neutralizing the organization's disaster recovery capabilities. This leads to catastrophic business disruption, data loss, and severe financial and reputational damage.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
Vulnerability in Veeam Backup & Replication component allows encrypted credentials stored in the configuration database to be obtained. This may lead to gaining access to the backup infrastructure hosts.
