Linux Kernel ALSA PCM Use-After-Free Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (CVE-2023-0266) Analysis and Mitigation Guide
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTSystems running Linux Kernel utilizing the ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) PCM subsystem
A local attacker can trigger a Use-After-Free (UAF) condition to corrupt kernel memory, leading to complete system compromise with Ring 0 privileges
Upgrade the Linux kernel past commit 56b88b50565cd8b946a2d00b0c83927b7ebb055e, or blacklist the vulnerable sound modules
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Update your Linux kernel to the latest stable release containing the official fix (commit 56b88b50565cd8b946a2d00b0c83927b7ebb055e or later) and reboot the system.
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade -y linux-image-generic
# For RHEL/Rocky Linux-based systems
sudo dnf upgrade -y kernel
# Reboot to apply the new kernel
sudo reboot2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching is not immediately feasible, disable the ALSA PCM kernel modules to prevent exploitation by blocking the vulnerable code path.
# Blacklist the vulnerable ALSA PCM modules
echo 'blacklist snd_pcm' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/disable-snd-pcm.conf
echo 'blacklist snd' | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/disable-snd-pcm.conf
# Unload the modules if they are not currently in use
sudo rmmod snd_pcm snd3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Verify the running kernel version and inspect system logs for any indicators of exploitation attempts or related kernel panics.
# Check the currently active kernel version
uname -r
# Search system logs for ALSA PCM errors or Use-After-Free warnings
sudo dmesg | grep -Ei 'snd_pcm|use-after-free|general protection fault'
sudo journalctl -k | grep -Ei 'snd_ctl|UAF'Block Kernel Privilege Escalation & Ransomware Payloads Before You Can Reboot

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability (CVE-2023-0266) is a Use-After-Free (UAF) flaw located within the ALSA PCM package of the Linux Kernel. The root cause lies in the lack of proper locking mechanisms in the SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_READ32 and SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_WRITE32 IOCTL handlers. Due to this missing synchronization, concurrent calls to these handlers can trigger a race condition, allowing an attacker to manipulate the state of sound element objects after they have been deallocated.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker with local, low-privileged access can exploit this vulnerability by initiating multi-threaded race conditions. By invoking the vulnerable IOCTLs simultaneously, the attacker frees the target element object and quickly reclaims the freed memory space with controlled payload data before the kernel accesses it again. When the kernel attempts to read or write using the stale pointer, it executes or processes the attacker-controlled data, leading to arbitrary code execution in Ring 0 (kernel space).
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
As a CISA KEV-listed vulnerability, this flaw has been actively exploited in the wild. In a cloud or enterprise environment, a local privilege escalation (LPE) vulnerability allows attackers who have established an initial foothold (e.g., via web application compromise or container escape) to break isolation boundaries, compromise the host operating system, and access sensitive tenant data or internal networks.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
A use after free vulnerability exists in the ALSA PCM package in the Linux Kernel. SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_{READ|WRITE}32 is missing locks that can be used in a use-after-free that can result in a priviledge escalation to gain ring0 access from the system user. We recommend upgrading past commit 56b88b50565cd8b946a2d00b0c83927b7ebb055e
