Zabbix Frontend SAML SSO Session Bypass and Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (CVE-2022-23131)
Executive & SecOps Summary
SECOPS ASSESSMENTZabbix Frontend versions 4.0.36, 5.0.18, 5.4.8, 6.0.0-alpha7 and below with SAML SSO enabled
Unauthenticated remote attackers can modify session data to bypass authentication, escalating privileges to gain full administrative access
Immediately upgrade Zabbix Frontend to patched versions (4.0.37, 5.0.19, 5.4.9, 6.0.0-beta1 or later) or disable SAML authentication
Affected Products & Version Scope
Remediation & Live Workaround Commands
PATCH & WORKAROUND1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands
Update your Zabbix Frontend packages to the latest secure versions using the system package manager.
# For Debian/Ubuntu-based systems
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install zabbix-frontend-php
# For RedHat/CentOS-based systems
sudo yum update zabbix-web-deps zabbix-web2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration
If patching cannot be applied immediately, disable SAML authentication directly in the Zabbix database to mitigate the risk.
# Disable SAML authentication via database query
# Connect to your Zabbix database and execute:
UPDATE config SET saml_auth_enabled=0;3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands
Audit web server access logs to identify potential exploitation attempts targeting the SAML SSO endpoint.
# Search for access logs targeting the SAML SSO endpoint with successful responses
grep 'index_sso.php' /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/httpd/access_log | grep ' 200 '
# Verify the currently installed Zabbix Frontend version
dpkg -l | grep zabbix-frontend || rpm -qa | grep zabbix-webBlock Exploits Instantly with Managed Virtual Patching Rules
Can't patch production immediately? Deploy managed WAF rules at the edge to intercept RCE, SQLi, and deserialization payloads before they hit your origin server.
Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics
1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause
This vulnerability is a session validation bypass issue (CWE-290) that occurs when SAML SSO (Single Sign-On) authentication is enabled in Zabbix Frontend. Zabbix stores session data in client-side cookies. During the SAML authentication flow, the application fails to properly verify the integrity and ownership of the user login stored within the session. This design flaw allows an attacker to manipulate the user identifier field inside the session cookie.
2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario
An attacker identifies a target Zabbix instance with SAML authentication enabled. By crafting or modifying a Base64/JSON-encoded Zabbix session cookie (zbx_session), the attacker injects a target username (such as the default administrator account 'Admin') into the SAML session data. When the modified cookie is sent to the server, Zabbix decrypts and trusts the session payload without verifying if the user successfully completed the SAML identity provider (IdP) flow, granting the attacker immediate administrative access.
3. Infrastructure & Business Impact
With a CVSS score of 9.8 (Critical), this vulnerability is actively exploited in the wild and is listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Successful exploitation grants full administrative control over the Zabbix monitoring platform. Attackers can leverage this access to execute arbitrary commands on monitored infrastructure, steal sensitive credentials, or pivot deeper into internal networks via Zabbix Agents and Proxies.
Official Vendor Advisories & References
In the case of instances where the SAML SSO authentication is enabled (non-default), session data can be modified by a malicious actor, because a user login stored in the session was not verified. Malicious unauthenticated actor may exploit this issue to escalate privileges and gain admin access to Zabbix Frontend. To perform the attack, SAML authentication is required to be enabled and the actor has to know the username of Zabbix user (or use the guest account, which is disabled by default).
