Executive & SecOps Summary

SECOPS ASSESSMENT
Affected Scope

Ubuntu Linux kernel versions with unprivileged user namespaces and OverlayFS mounting enabled

Impact

A local unprivileged attacker can exploit improper file capability validation to gain full root privileges on the host

Mitigation

Upgrade to the latest patched Ubuntu kernel and reboot, or temporarily disable unprivileged user namespaces

Affected Products & Version Scope

Ubuntu 20.10, 20.04 LTS, 18.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS, and 14.04 ESM running vulnerable kernel versions

Remediation & Live Workaround Commands

PATCH & WORKAROUND

1. Official Patch & Version Upgrade Commands

Update the package repository and upgrade the Linux kernel to the latest patched version, then reboot the system to apply changes.

bash
# Update package lists and upgrade the kernel
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade linux-image-generic -y

# Reboot the system to apply the new kernel
sudo reboot

2. Temporary Workaround & Hardening Configuration

If an immediate reboot is not feasible, mitigate the risk by disabling unprivileged user namespaces to block the primary attack vector.

bash
# Disable unprivileged user namespaces immediately
sudo sysctl -w kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone=0

# Persist the configuration across reboots
echo 'kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone=0' | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/99-disable-userns.conf

3. Log Audit & IoC Verification Commands

Verify the current running kernel version and check if unprivileged user namespaces are enabled on the host.

bash
# Check the current running kernel version
uname -a

# Check if unprivileged user namespaces are enabled (1 means enabled)
sysctl kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone

Technical Root Cause & Exploitation Mechanics

1. Vulnerability Overview & Root Cause

This vulnerability exists in the Linux kernel's OverlayFS subsystem due to improper validation of file capabilities with respect to user namespaces on files in an underlying file system. Specifically, Ubuntu kernels carry a custom patch allowing unprivileged users to mount OverlayFS. When combined with unprivileged user namespaces, this allows security boundary bypasses during capability mapping.

2. Exploitation Mechanics & Attack Scenario

An attacker initiates the exploit by creating a new unprivileged user namespace where they possess mapped root privileges. Within this namespace, the attacker mounts an OverlayFS instance and sets the security.capability extended attribute on a target binary via setxattr. Because the kernel fails to properly validate whether the capability setter has appropriate privileges in the init namespace, the capability is written to the underlying file system. When executed from the host namespace, the binary runs with elevated root privileges.

3. Infrastructure & Business Impact

As a highly reliable Local Privilege Escalation (LPE) vulnerability, this flaw allows any local user or compromised application container to escape restrictions and gain full administrative control over the host. In multi-tenant environments, containerized infrastructures, or shared hosting platforms, this can lead to complete infrastructure compromise and data exfiltration.
